BARKER, Pauline Marguerite

April 19, 1934 – Calgary, Alberta
January 8, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with sadness that the family of Pauline Barker announces her passing at Rocky View General Hospital on the morning of January 8, 2019 at the age of 84.

Pauline was born the youngest daughter to her parents, Arnold and Emily Dawson. Pauline enjoyed baking, cooking, Square Dancing, crafting, golfing, and swimming. Spending time with her family was always a favorite even when she was refereeing between her many children. A highlight for Pauline was Square Dancing in the 1988 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies. She also enjoyed travelling with family, especially to any place warm; Hawaii was definitely a personal favorite. She travelled to Disneyland several times including for her honeymoon in 1959. Throughout her life, Pauline travelled across Canada, went on cruises, and visited Dubai.

While raising her family, Pauline worked for over twenty years with Mackimmie Matthews Law Firm as a Court Runner. She was also a Foster Parent to numerous children over the years who quickly became part of the family. Pauline also found time to support her daughters and the Brownies as a Snowy Owl. In retirement she volunteered with the 1997 World Police and Fire Games, and enjoyed her home and garden. Baking bread and cookies for Kathryn was a weekly task she and the entire family enjoyed. She was always kind and sweet, garnering the name “Auntie Sweetness,” but had a quick wit that those who knew her really well got to see.

Although Alzheimer’s was taking her away, she kept her sense of humour and determination until the end.

Pauline was married for over fifty-nine years and leaves behind her husband John (Jack) Barker; son Murray Barker and daughter-in-law Jen Ellerman; daughters and sons-in-law Maureen Barker, Allison and Dale Palmer, Sharon and Duane Schreiner; and granddaughter Kathryn Palmer.

Pauline was predeceased by an infant daughter, Theresa; her parents, Arnold and Emily Dawson; brothers, Arnold, Vincent, Frank, Arthur; and sister, Kathleen.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North Calgary, AB, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Parish (2424 24 Avenue NW Calgary, AB), on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
