ASHER, Michael John

September 29, 1931 – Blairmore, Alberta
January 28, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Mike Asher of Calgary, Alberta passed away Monday, January 28, 2019, at the age of 87 years. Born in Blairmore, Alberta, Mike moved to Calgary in 1950 to pursue a career as an electrician and was proud of his 35-year career with the City of Calgary Electric System.

An avid golfer and competitive archer, Mike loved the outdoors and would try anything once. His sense of humour and love for life made him a lifelong friend to many and will be sadly missed by those who knew him. His passion for golf gave him the expertise he needed to provide instruction to many, and we will all lovingly remember the continued commentary of “keep your head down” and “keep your eye on the ball.” Mike was also as soulful and wise as a classic country tune and is remembered by his jazzy-spirit on the dance floor.

Mike is survived by his loving companion, Dolores Sweany; children Donna (Valmont) Lanteigne, Diane Fraser, Carol (Len) Andree, James Asher and Colleen (Jack) Shaw, stepchildren Dwayne (Bonnie) Sweany and Dawn (Andrew) Buzinsky. Mike also leaves behind his two sisters Natalie (Robert) Heembrock and Marilyn Barbour. Mike’s legacy will continue to live on through his nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by all those who knew him.

Mike was predeceased by his father Peter, mother Mary and sisters, Eleanor and Alvina.

Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.  Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd. 4. Uncle Mike was a positive and joyful presence in our home, and as kids, it was very special to have him living just down the alley from us – with all of our cousins, of course! We loved his spontaneous drop ins on Saturday mornings for coffee, and while he tried his best to teach me to play golf, it never quite caught on!
Even though we didn’t see you very often, we’ll miss you, Uncle Mike.

Sending strength to the rest of the family and hope that the happy memories you shared together fill your hearts.
