ANDERSON, Mary Matilda (nee Berard)

August 1, 1923 – Kelowna, British Columbia
July 3, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Mary Anderson of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the age of 94.

Mom was born on August 1, 1923 in Kelowna, British Columbia to Andrew and Gertrude Berard.

She was the eldest of four, including a brother, Leonard, a sister Edith and a step brother William. They all resided on the family farm. Later on, while attending a community dance, Mary met Victor Anderson. As time went by they decided to get married on June 28, 1945. Their first child was born in Kelowna, B.C. Then they moved to Calgary, and had three more children. They decided to return to Kelowna and welcomed three more children. Their family consisted of four sons and three daughters.

In the spring of 1967, Mom and Dad loaded up the red and white two-door Pontiac with six of their seven children, and moved back to Calgary as the eldest son had recently moved out on his own.

In 1969 Mary and Victor parted ways.

In 1971 while raising her six children on her own, a girlfriend asked Mom to attend some square dancing lessons with her. There she met a Danish fella named Erik Pedersen. Much to her surprise she found out Erik only lived two doors down. After a period of time Erik eventually met all the children.

Mom and Erik shared interests which changed Mom’s life for the better. A few of their favorites were dancing, music, camping, rodeos and travelling, whenever the opportunities arose.

Mom is survived by her seven loving children, William (Wileen), Robert (Loretta), Brian, Bradley, Elizabeth (Cameron), Beverly (Gordon), and Bonnie; along with seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mary was predeceased by her mother, father, step-mother, brother Len, ex-husband Victor, and her life long companion of forty-four years, Erik.

Condolence Messages

  1. We wish to express our deepest condolences to the entire family of the passing of your Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Mary Anderson. While we didn’t get together a whole lot over the years, when we did, she left a lasting impression of being a kind and caring person, and we had lots of fun. She always had a great smile to offer you, keen wit, and a great story to share with us when we were together. She did indeed have a heart of gold. She also had one of the BEST appetites when the fare was served. As one once said……..I have not lost a Mother, I have found an ANGEL! God Bless You Mary. We will miss you sorely……………
Margaret Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Wendy and Brian Andrews, Grant and Donna Johnson, and Family.
