ANAND, Susan

September 21, 1948 – Heage, England
July 1, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Susan beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on July 1, 2017 at the age of 68 years.

Sue was born in the small village of Heage, in Derbyshire, England. As a child she quickly became adventurous and independent, while excelling academically and finding a passion for art. As a teenager she blossomed into a beautiful, fashionable woman, ultimately meeting her equally fashionable husband, Brij. As Sue said, “it was love at first sight.” A son and daughter later completed their family.

In 1982, Sue, along with her husband and children, moved to Calgary, Alberta to pursue a new opportunity. The transition from English life to Canadian life was slow for her, but over time Susan came to love her new community. In 1991, she started a career as an Administration Assistant in the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Calgary.

She purposefully retired early at age 58 to start her role as grandma when her first grandchildren Jacob and Benjamin were born. During her ten years of retirement, Sue and Brij saw the world, traveling to exotic locations like India, Kenya, Ireland, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Mexico. The couple purchased a summer home in West Kelowna, B.C. where they were introduced to a warm and receptive community and a new love of Okanagan wine. In her later years, Sue became an expert at spoiling her youngest grandchild, Olivia.

Sue was a happy, caring, welcoming and kind person – she accepted everyone for who they are, and as they are. Sue would tell you that her passion was gardening; her family will tell you her legacy will be the strong, loving community she created around her.

Sue will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 45 years Brij Anand; son Robert and his wife Tanya Anand; daughter Kate and her husband Mike Swartz; grandchildren Jacob Swartz, Benjamin Swartz, and Olivia Anand; sister Margaret Lodge (Englmann) and her family of Underwood, Nottinghamshire, England; and, more than a dozen brothers- and sisters-in-law across England, Kenya, and Canada.

In accordance with Sue’s wishes, she will be cremated following a family funeral service. In addition, the family will host a Celebration of Life event at the Glencoe Club in Calgary (636 – 29 Ave SW, Calgary, AB), at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 14th, 2017. We will share wine, snacks, and stories in her honour. Everyone she knew and touched is welcome. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

Sue’s final days were spent at the Rosedale Hospice in Calgary, where her entire family was treated with the utmost compassion and care during her stay. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Rosedale Hospice #1245 – 70 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 2X8 Telephone: (403) 284 – 5195.

In living memory of Susan Anand, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.

  5. Susan Underwood

Sue and Brij were wonderful neighbours in Silver Springs and she took my kids in so willingly after school – Mark and Kate were good friends. Sue was a lovely beautiful lady – full of love and compassion – even our cats shared a friendship and solidarity against intruders. What do you say when someone so lovely is taken so soon?

  6. Very few people in this life have pure hearts- sue is one of them. Although in my heart I truly believe her soul will always be with us so I cant miss her, I still say it through tears.
May god bless her & give her the gift of feeling our love ’til we join her.

  7. I can tell that Susan would have been exactly the kind of woman I would have loved for a friend- and clearly so much of her is reflected in my friend Kate who is also beautiful, fashionable and compassionate. I am so sorry, Anand family. I hope that in the coming weeks and months you all experience nothing but compassion, love and warm memories. When my mom passed, we all swore that a certain star twinkled brighter than ever before, it felt like it was just for us and we relied on that star when we missed her most. My small offering to you is to look up- you’ll find your star too.

  11. Susan was a true gem of a woman. Although we had limited contact here in the UK, she was always a breath of fresh air whenever we were reunited. A great void has now been left which is impossible to fill. However, we all know the fantastic, kind, loving person Sue was would not want us to hang our heads in mourning, but to be happy and enjoy our lives in her name. She will be sorely missed by all of us at the Housley residence. Love always, The Housleys.

  13. Dear Brij and family….I well remember seeing Sue from a distance at W. O .Mitchell School Concert. Her smile was the first thing to catch my eye. Later, the smile flashed early one school morning as the girls headed off on a bus trip to somewhere….
As the years passed, I came to recognize Sue’s smile as warm, happy and genuine….it was not just the look alike smile of Julia Roberts. It was the real thing. It matched the gleam in her eyes and the joy of her essence. This was not a fake it til you make it lady….Sue was never the imaginary woman of fairy tales. Her spirit to me was made of all the best in life….beauty, appreciation, honor, perserverance and devotion. Go with Peace, Sue. It was a pleasure for me that our daughter’s brought us together and you will remain cherished in my heart as truly as you will in those of others.
