ALLAN, Vera

December 8, 1929 – Derwent, Alberta
June 23, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Vera Allan left this world a better place because of her presence in it. Vera died on June 23, 2019 – one day after the 66th anniversary of her marriage to the love of her life, Tom Allan.

Vera never spoke badly about anyone. She taught us about fairness, and integrity, and absolute honesty. Our mom’s language of love was service to others and she lived that truth forever. Vera wanted to nourish our souls by feeding us dishes full of love from her kitchen, and on hot summer days, worked hard to stock our shelves with jars of sweet jam for the winter. Our parent’s marriage was inspirational. They modelled a union of the deepest care and found their strength in one another. Vera was born and raised on a farm near Manville, Alberta and graduated from Alberta College in 1949. She met her dear Tom and soon after, became a city girl. She was a faithful member of Southwood United Church and found such joy and friendship there. Mom cherished her family and we will all be lost without her.

They have five children, Gail, Wade (Dolores), Candace (Mike), Tammy (Byron), Lance (Raechelle); and ten grandchildren, Phaedra (Marilyn), Fiona, Shea (Ryan), Kyle, Levi, Rose, Shelby, Spencer, Maygen, and Dylan; and two great-granddaughters Alice and Lucy.
She will also be remembered by her brothers Clarence (Vicky) and Lloyd, brothers-in-law Bob and Ron and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at Southwood United Church (10690 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com. Memorial tributes may be made directly for Cancer Research to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222. www.albertacancer.ca/memorial.

In living memory of Vera Allan, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

To Uncle Tom, Gail, Wade and Dolores, Candy and Mike, Tammy and Chick, Lance and Raechelle, and all of your beautiful children and grandchildren, Rodrigo, Anna Sofia and I send our deepest condolences. Auntie Vera was a very special person, who gave comfort to us all just by her very presence (much like her mother!). I am so happy that I visited her and Tom the last time I was in Alberta. As usual, Rodney will most ably represent us on Thursday, but rest assured we will be thinking of you all.

  5. All my years at Southwood UC Vera was a part of it but especially the UCW. Her support and friendship meant the world to me and although I am no longer a part of that community I have many fond memories of it and its people. I’m sorry I will be unable to attend the service but you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

  6. How to imagine a world without Auntie Vera – it seems like the world is a little off kilter today, not quite right. What a beautiful Lady!! – I am so blessed to be compared to “Auntie Vera”, and so blessed to have had her a part of my life. Every November a handwritten card and letter arrived for my birthday, most that I have kept and will treasure. Thank you Auntie Vera for loving us all!! ………Sharon

  7. Both Tom and Vera were my parents-away-from-home during my 20’s and single years. Always welcomed at their home, there was always a tasty homemade treat and a great kitchen conversation to be had. Always even keel, I’ll always treasure Vera’s practical words of no nonsense wisdom – keep it simple.
She has helped shape so many lives and, yes, the world was better because she was in it. My deepest sympathy to all the family.

We were saddened to hear of Vera’s passing. Our condolences to Tom and all your family. Though infrequent, my parents (Bob and Laura(Berg) Woods) enjoyed their visits with Tom and Vera over the years.

Never met your mum Gail, but I feel like I know all kinds of anecdotes – mostly around food! What a great mum. So sorry for your loss and for your dad too. So glad they got to celebrate if only briefly that 66 years if marriage. Sending love and hugs to you and your family. Mums are just special.
