ALIGIZAKIS, Aristidis (Aris)

January 12, 1938 – Haidari, Attica
January 5, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Mr. Aris Aligizakis, P.Eng died peacefully with his wife at his side in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on January 5th, 2016 at the age of 77.

Aris was born on January 12th in Haidari, Attica, Greece to Andreas and Irini Aligizakis. While living in Greece as a young man he completed military service and worked as a tourist guide and marine engineer, learning 6 languages and traveling the world. A desire for a better life led him to work in Germany as a machinist, and later to travel to Canada. As a new immigrant he certified as a First Class steam engineer and continued to work in his chosen field. In 1967 he met and married Olga, a commercial artist. After spending the early years of their marriage in the provinces of British Columbia and Quebec, Aris and Olga settled permanently in Calgary, Alberta with their young family. Aris fulfilled a lifelong goal to become a Professional Engineer in 1981. He worked as an instructor at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology from 1975 to 1994. Family was the centre of Aris’s life and the Aligizakis’s had many life-forming experiences skiing in Kananaskis, cycling the bike trails of Calgary, and especially sailing in the Glenmore Reservoir and Kootenay Lake BC. Aris spent hours with his sons in his home machine shop, building skills and interests that would influence their careers. He also shared a life long love of music and fine arts, taking the family to the symphony, opera and ballet. Aris started a new phase in his career in 1994 when he began working in the private sector. A high point in his career was forming his consulting company Apogee Engineering and Design in 2001, which he would run with his wife Olga for the rest of his life. Aris found personal fulfillment in working for his many loyal clients while having the flexibility to pursue personal interests and travel with his beloved wife. Aris was thrilled to become a grandfather in October 2014 to Alice. He was an irreplaceable part of her life during her first year.

Aris is survived by his wife of 48 years, Olga (nee Savinkoff); his sons Andrew Aligizakis and Nathan Aligizakis; his daughter Irena Rosychuk (Bryan) and granddaughter Alice, and his sister Roula Linardou.

  4. Dearest Aris,
I will always hold dear to my heart Your kind, considerate, and sensitive heart. I reveled in your story-telling, ingenuity, and love of life.
I will always remember, after our family photo shoot at Fish Creek Park, how loving your words were towards Mark. When you took my elbows in the palms of your hands, looked me in the eye, and expressed your wishes for the health, well-being, and happiness for Mark; I felt your overwhelming love for all those in your life.
I will miss your presence, your laugh, and your joie-de-vivre.

    Dear Olga and Family,

My deepest condolences to you and your family with the passing of Aris. I feel I have also lost someone whose personality and knowledge will be deeply missed. I know it will be many years, if ever, before I lose that desire to call Aris because I need the benefit of his wisdom. Or just to find out how the latest trip to B.C. or to Greece has been.
My sympathies go out to you and your family.

    My dear Olga,
dear Anrew, Nathan, Irena, Bryan and Alice

I am writing this letter to you all as a ‘last farewell’ to my beloved brother Aris and as my sad participation to your deep grief on his passing.

I can understand how hard to bear his unexpected loss is and will be for you, how much you will be missing him. But, what will be comforting you, as well as me, is the ever-living memory of him, his words and deeds as your dear and supportive husband and father — as my unforgettable brother.

In these difficult moments of sorrow, my thoughts go back to Aris’ and mine childhood in Greece. Living as children in a war-stricken poor country like Greece was not an easy path to walk on. But thanks, above all, to our devoted parents, and, of course our relatives and real friends, we managed to overcome hardships and go ahead in our lives. Young Aris was eager and willing to prosper and have his own happy family. Our parents, Andreas and Irini, had done what they could in order to offer him the means to materialize his dreams. And, my brother’s dreams finally turned real in the democratic and prosperous country of Canada and they took shape above all in the figure of his beloved and devoted wife Olga and the lovely family they created.

My prayers and thoughts are now with you all. May our Aris rest in Peace!

    Love you all

    Argyro Aligizakis-Linardou, Aris’ sister

I am very sorry to hear the news of Aris’ passing. I worked with him on a Power Engineering project at SAIT in the early 1980s. He was dedicated to making sure the project was as correct and precise as it could be. While I didn’t know him very well personally I found him to be fascinating and interesting when he shared conversions about various topics outside of the project itself. I very much enjoyed the time we worked together. He will be missed.
