ALAM, Syed Nurul

December 31, 1931 – Hobokhali, Bangladash
July 31, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Syed Nurul Alam on July 31, 2018 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 86.

He was first and foremost a family man. He was a devoted and loving husband to Morsheda, his wife of 58 years. He was a kind and caring father to Shireen, father-in-law to Michael and grandfather to Noah and Aliya.

Born in Hobokhali, Jessore District, in what is now Bangladesh; he was a gifted scholar from an early age. He received an international scholarship to attend and complete his Masters Degree in Social Sciences in Economics from The International Institute of Social Studies at The Hague, Netherlands in 1954. He returned to Dhaka University as a Senior Lecturer until 1962. Subsequently he received the prestigious Nelson Rockefeller Foundation College Scholarship to attend Yale University for graduate studies in Economics. He received both a Master of Arts and a PhD in Economics from Yale in 1968.

He married Morsheda Begum in 1960 and, along with his wife Morsheda and daughter Shireen, immigrated to Calgary in 1968. He was an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Calgary until his retirement in 1993, teaching multiple generations of university students.

He was a remarkable man, influenced by both cultures in which he lived. He had a deep love of Classical Music, of which he had an almost encyclopedic knowledge. He and Morsheda were annual ticket holders of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for many years. He read voraciously and had an exceptional breadth of knowledge in history, literature and politics. He could always be counted on to provide brilliant, well reasoned analysis, often delivered with unexpected wit.

In addition to intellectual pursuits, he was a well rounded man. He followed hockey regularly for the fifty years he lived in Canada, as well as CFL football and tennis. He loved spending time outdoors, and he and his family spent time hiking and camping each summer through
many National parks in both Canada and the United States. He was also avidly curious about mechanics and construction, and was self taught in auto repair and home maintenance.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a quiet, gentle and respectful man. He gave astute and well articulated guidance and opinions when sought, but always fostered and supported independence and growth in those around him. He taught his family by example the virtues of patience, resilience and quiet, steady love.

Thank you to Maria Carducci, Dr. David Goodhart and the staff of the Foothills Hospital Cardiac Function Clinic for the exceptional and kind care, especially over the past few years. Thank you also to Dr. Norman Yee, his family physician, and the caring staff of the Neurology Unit at Foothills Hospital in his final illness.

“When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.”
-Kahlil Gibran

    Dear Morsheda and family,
I remember Syed as a very gentle person. He never raised his voice or made an unpleasant remark.
He was a very conscientious teacher. I remember especially that in his last year of teaching when his eyesight was not so good anymore, he organized his lectures so carefully.
He suffered his longtime ill health with quiet dignity.
We wish you a lot of strength for living without him.
