AITKEN, Gary Thomas

June 29, 1948 –Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
December 9, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Gary beloved husband of Lois Sparling of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the age of 70 years.

Gary Thomas was born on June 29, 1948, the second of Tommy and Esther (Tharp) Aitken. He attended Bedford Road Collegiate and the University of Saskatchewan, graduating with a BCom in 1970. Spending summers working at his uncle Lawrence’s farm when he was a teenager made a great impression on him. After working in Winnipeg, and a couple of years as a hippy in Vancouver, he moved to Ottawa in 1974, to work for the Federal Department of Public Works. This is where he met his future wife, Lois Sparling. He joined Lois in Toronto while she attended law school. Gary articled at Andrew Hayos & Associates. In 1979 he became a Chartered Accountant. Gary and Lois moved to Calgary in 1980 and were married in South March, Ontario on June 14th of the same year. Too lazy to move, Gary and Lois lived at 38 Hallbrook Drive S.W., Calgary for their entire married lives.

A detective at heart, Gary worked as an auditor for the Canada Revenue Agency from 1982 to 2008. In 1984 their elder son, Craig, was born. Their younger son, Derek was born in 1987. Gary loved games, including Chess, Bridge, Dungeons & Dragons and Settlers of Cattan. He also greatly enjoyed his annual fishing trips with Murray and friends, and daily walks around the Glenmore Reservoir. Before, but especially after retirement, Gary followed the stock market closely, using it as a keyhole through which to understand the world.

Gary is survived by his brother, Murray of Saskatoon, wife, Lois of Calgary, sons, Derek of Calgary and Craig of Toronto; daughter-in-law Victoria Paterson, and granddaughter, Samantha.

Gary was predeceased by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Gary Aitken, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  16. Dear Lois and family
Please accept my sincere condolences for Gary’s death. I just heard about it from Russ Moore. We all grew up together in Saskatoon. I hadn’t been in contact since around the time of my mom’s death in Calgary. This is a time of year for reflection and I’m thinking of our times in the old neighborhood, a couple of good bands we heard in Toronto, your wedding day in Ottawa, and a couple of ski days in Banff. We had a lot of great discussions along the way.
    Sincerely,
    Brian Vaughan
