AITKEN, Brian Allan

August 2, 1946 – Calgary, Alberta
May 4, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Brian Aitken of Calgary, AB on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the age of 72 years.

Brian Allan Aitken was born in Calgary, Alberta on August 2, 1946, a proud second generation Calgarian. After completing high school at Western Canada High School, he attended the University of Alberta where he graduated with a BSc in Chemistry. He later joined Clarkson Gordon and worked his way to partner before leaving in 1982 to start his own practice. He was dedicated to his clients and made friends with many of them sharing his caustic wit, humour and charm. Brian was an avid boater, skier and obsessive golfer. He enjoyed travelling to Palm Desert in the winter and Vancouver Island in the summer with his beloved wife Sally, during his semi-retirement. Brian was a devoted husband, loving father, Papa, brother, uncle, golf buddy and Yoda.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years Sarah “Sally” Jane (nee Corbett); his children Sean and his wife Ana, Alison and her husband Michael Freeborn, and brother Brent and his wife Merrill. He especially adored and was so proud of his grandchildren Brittany, Emily, Samuel, Katie, Zoë and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren Carter and Gavin; as well as many dear nieces and nephews; his sister-in-law Doris and Peter Kenyon; sister-in-law Marilyn Jolie; and extended family members. He is also survived by Raven, Gary and Shorte. Brian was predeceased by his parents, Stuart Aitken and Fern Inglis; and his brother-in-law Harvey Jolie. Brian gave so much to so many and demanded nothing in return.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Glencoe Golf and Country Club (31002 Elbow River Dr, Calgary, AB) on Monday, May 27, 2019 from 3:00p.m. – 6:00p.m. Come and have a pint, wear your golf clothes and share your best Brian stories. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations can be made to the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary located at HSC G3032, 3330 Hospital Dr NW, Calgary AB, T2N 4N1. Please make all cheques payable to the University of Calgary and specify in the memo that they are “to support the Hotchkiss Brain Institute in memory of Brian Aitken”.

The family wishes to thank the amazing staff on Unit 47 at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for their great care in his final two weeks, including Dr Jenn Hughes who was very supportive.

In living memory of Brian Aitken, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

    Sally, Sean, Allison and families

Please accept our deepest sympathy in the passing of Brian. I had a long business relationship with Brian through my employment with Harley Hotchkiss and Harley’s related companies and our personal accounting requirements. He was always so up beat and when we chatted several weeks ago, in spite of his serious illness, he was still in so confident that he would defeat the monster within him. Brian will be missed by so many of his clients and friends. May he rest in peace.

    Sincerely, Doreen & Don Warren

I was so sorry to read of Brian’s passing. I have known him all my life, since his parents and mine were close friends. Brian was clever, thoughtful, and funny – and a great audience – laughing appreciatively at a joke he had heard 100 times. Sandie and I would have love to come to the Celebrating and catch up with long-time friends, but unfortunately are out of the country. However, our thoughts are with Sally and her family and with Brent (SOA) and his.

Dear Sally and family. The Hotchkiss and Mackie families are so sad to learn of Brian’s passing. He has been part of our ‘family’ for so long. I enjoyed so many long chats with him over the years and he was most helpful in helping me deal with my fathers final affairs. He always brightened when speaking of his cherished family. We will miss him very much. You have our deepest sympathy. Brenda Mackie
