MUNDRY, Joachim (Joe)

Posted By Obits On February 16, 2013 @ 3:55 PM In Obituary | 8 Comments

October 8, 1927 – February 16, 2013

Joachim Mundry passed away after a courageous battle with cancer in Calgary, Alberta, on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the age of 85 years.

Joe was born and raised in Gross Wartenberg, Silesia, Germany and immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1952. It was there that he started his life long career as a steamfitter in the construction industry. He chose an uncomplicated path, always finding joy in life’s simple pleasures. His greatest joy was enjoying the great outdoors with friends and family. Joe’s other great passion was playing the German card game “Skat”. He competed in countless Canadian and international tournaments culminating with his victory at the Canadian Championships in 2006. He was honoured to be chosen captain of the Canadian team competing in Chile in the same year. Joe’s retirement years were spent on his beloved country property in the Kawartha Lakes District in Ontario. He could now spend even more time “in the bush” amongst the trees, birds and animals he so treasured. By now Joe was known to many as “Opa”. A special highlight was visits from his family and three grandchildren who enjoyed walks in the forest, observing fall colours and cross-country skiing. Despite the great separation of distance and time, Joe also remained close to his relatives in Germany, many of whom enjoyed visits to his property over the years.

Joachim is survived by his loving son and daughter-in-law Martin Mundry and Donalda MacBeath; grandchildren Krista Mundry, Lisa Mundry and Gavin Mundry; former spouse and long-time friend Else Mundry (nee Koehler); sister Helene Keltenich (Mundry) and brother Hubert Mundry; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Vinzenz Mundry and Hedwig Mundry (nee Wanzek); siblings Georg Mundry, Hildegard Mundry, Konrad Mundry and Paul Mundry.

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank the staff at Comfort Keepers and the Foothills Medical Centre for their care and support. A family service will be held in Paderborn, Germany followed by interment in the family cemetery.

In living memory of Joachim Mundry, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

As one of son, Martin’s, many friends I had the pleasure of Joe’s company on several occasions, most recently with my family at his property. We’ve lost a good, generous man who loved his family very well.

Condolence from Wolfgang Gallus on February 25th, 2013 11:17 AM

Wolfgang Gallus, Germany, Achims sister Helene is my Godmother
I`m sad to hear Achim has died. May he rest in God`s peace!
An important poet of our region, Friedrich Wilhelm Weber, wrote:
“Trennung ist unser Los,
Wiedersehen unsere Hoffnung.
Der Glaube tröstet,
wo die Liebe weint.”
“Separation is our destiny,
seeing each other again our hope.
Believing gives salvation
where love is weeping.”
With love Wolfgang
