ZONDA, Helene “Baba”

April 16, 1924 – Szeged, Hungary
May 7, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Baba Zonda of Calgary, AB, on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. She passed with a renewed faith in God and is now truly at peace.

Baba was born on Wednesday, April 16, 1924 in Szeged, Hungary, the only child of Erno and Ilona Matsek. She spent her youth in Szeged and graduated with a University Degree in Geology. Her career took her to various oil fields throughout Hungary where she met her husband Paul. They married in 1951 and with their two small daughters, escaped the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and came to settle in Canada. Here Baba worked for a number of years as a geologist until she stayed home to raise their children.

Baba will be remembered for her determined personality, spunky spirit and wonderful Hungarian cooking. Baba and Paul traveled extensively around the world. She enjoyed taking part in skiing and figure skating but mostly loved to play tennis well into her later years. Above all, Baba loved to stay in touch with all her family and took great joy in following their journeys through life.

Baba was predeceased by her husband Paul of 60 years, and is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law Annie and David Kanaroski and Susie and Don Smith. Baba is also survived by five grandchildren Stephen and Michael Smith, Natalie (Ben) Shaub and John and Tommy Kanaroski and four great-grandchildren Isabella, Ethan and Emalina Shaub and Rocky Smith, who all knew her as “GG Baba”; and her niece and nephew in Hungary Dr. Eva Juhasz and Sandor Juhasz.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff at Brentwood Care Centre and also a very special thank you to Marlena and Dora for their kind and loving care of Baba.

In living memory of Baba Zonda, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  6. I am saddened to find out that baba and Paul have passed away. They were my surrogate parents as I developed my tennis game at the elbow park tennis club. Their kindness and infectious enthusiasm for tennis and life I will always remember. The last time I saw them was in 1996 when les bondar and I defeated local tennis legend nick mohtadi and his partner at the Glencoe club in a national tennis tournament. I hugged baba and shook Paul’s hand afterwards and thanked them for developing my love of the game. I will never forget them.
