YOUNG, Mary “Dorothy” (nee O’Byrne)

May 15, 1924 – Lewvan, SK
May 18, 2017 – Calgary, AB

Dorothy Young of Calgary, AB, passed away on May 18, 2017 at the age of 93 years.

She was born near Gray, SK to Mark and Lavina (McAllister) O’Byrne and knew the hardships of losing her mother at age six and growing up through the thirties on a farm near Lewvan, SK. Her early education was at Gough School, and Loretto Convent, Sedley with post-secondary at Reliance School of Commerce, in Regina graduating in1943. She made an adventurous move west to Calgary in 1945 and it became her home for the next 72 years. She began working in the fledgling Alberta Oil and Gas Industry and through several sector and company changes, retired in 1989 as Payroll Supervisor with PanCanadian Petroleum Ltd. (now Encana) after a fulfilling career. She was an active member of the Desk and Derrick Club, serving as local chapter president in 1964 and took in many conventions. Dorothy had a zest for life, a kind heart and an Irish wit; loved the colour green and was most proud of her Irish heritage. She loved family, fun and festivities; never turning down a chance to socialize. She travelled to many countries over the years: Japan, Central America, Great Britain, China, and Thailand, to name a few.

Dorothy married Ernest “Douglas” Young, of Calgary, in 1982 and though sadly having too few years together, gained a beautiful family of six. She proudly wore her title “Grandma Dorothy” to their children and grandchildren in the years to come. Her last home of more than 12 years was at Chartwell Fountains of Mission and she leaves many friends, and a wonderful and caring staff.

Left to cherish her memory: step-daughter, Monica Young (Doug); step-sons, Bruce (Dianne) and MacDonald (Carol); step-daughters, Genevieve (Greg), Nicas and Jessica Young; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Irene), Leonard (Rose), Raymond (Margaret) and Cecil (Eleanor); sister, Eileen O’Byrne; sister-in-law, Anne O’Byrne and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy is predeceased by husband, Doug Young; step-daughter, Loretta Young; brothers, Leslie (in childhood), Leo and Joseph; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anne (Norman) McGrath, (Bill Ulrich) and Stella (Jim) Kirk; nephew, Patrick Kirk and great-niece, Holly Moran.

Hers was a life well lived and to quote Leigh Stanley, “We will never be the same as we were before this loss but are ever so much better for having had something so great to lose.”

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 – 18th Avenue S.W.) on June 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the church. 1. Dennis O'Byrne :

For many nieces and nephews, Auntie Dot easily earned the tile of “favourite aunt”. She was a wonderful woman in all the ways described in her obituary. Striking out on her own the way she did as a young, single woman back in the 40’s, I dare say many women today would see her as somewhat of a trail-blazer. What I’ll remember always about Dot was her love of life, family and friends, her sharp wit and that wonderful, ever-present sense of humour. Family gatherings were all the more enjoyable whenever Dot was there to tell a story or two about growing up with her brother “John”, my father. May God bless her and keep her.

  2. Penny & Gary Creagh :

It is with deep sadness that we hear of the passing of Dorothy. It was many a time we had fun playing cards and laughing over little things. She was a great friend of my mom and they would go travelling together with the Desk & Derrick gals. Our prayers are with you at this sad time.
