YOUNG, Jean Clare (nee Dobbin)

August 20, 1923 – October 24, 2011

With heavy hearts and loving memories, our family announces the passing of our beautiful and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Jean Clare Young on Monday, October 24, 2011 at the age of 88 years.

Jean was the middle of three daughters born to Walter and Anna Dobbin in Oyen, AB. Her father was one of the original Northwest Mounted Police. The family lived in many different towns in southern Alberta. At the age of nineteen, Jean joined the Royal Canadian Navy (WRENS) looking for adventure and meeting many lifelong friends while stationed in Halifax and Victoria. After the war, Jean met her darling Bill in Edmonton. Shortly after Bill Jr. was born they moved to Calgary and raised five more children. In 1983, Jean and Bill left Calgary and retired in Victoria. She returned to Calgary in 1993 much to her family’s delight and enjoyed numerous family gatherings over the years. Jean was such a gracious, affectionate lady, whose arms were always open to family and friends. She had a gift of making everyone feel welcome and loved. We miss you Mom!

Left to mourn Jean’s passing are her children, Cate, Donna (Dave), Marg (Kelly), Bob (Cecile), Pete (Cindy); daughter-in-law Karen; sister Marie (Dr. J. Moreau); and brother-in-law Ed Helwick. Jean was also blessed with nine grandchildren and three-great-grandchildren. She was also sweet, adoring Auntie Jean to the Moreau, O’Byrne and Helwick families. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bill Sr. in 1986; sister Terry in 2002; and her son Bill Jr. in January of 2011.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Our family would like to thank all the staff at McKenzie Towne Care Centre for their warm, genuine care of our dear mother.

Condolence Messages

  1. Michael Hamilton Dobbin :

My sincere condolences to Jeans family. Jean was my fathers (Thomas Hamilton Dobbin) first cousin. He often told me about “Uncle Walter”, my grandfather Anthony’s brother, and often wondered if I’d come across any of Walters children or grandchildren in my 30 years in Alberta. Sadly, this is how I’ve learned that there are many relatives here. If any of the family are keeping the ancestral records, as I am, I’d love to meet or converse through email. I have a couple of photos of Walter and Anne, and a family tree. Once again, my condolences. Michael H (Mike) Dobbin,

  4. Lee & Liz Thompson :

Our sincere and deepest condolances to all of the family. We knew your Mom and Dad from 1955 when Bill and I served together in the RCASC and the girls became fast friends in the Ladies Association. Many great memories, all of them with great fun. Liz and Jean were particularily close as they were both inclined to be very cheeky – with a great sense of humor. Our prayers are with you all.
