Young, James Stanley (Stan)
January 24, 1927 – Brancepeth, SK
November 7, 2014 – Calgary, AB
Stan Young was born on the family farm outside of Brancepeth, Saskatchewan and died in Calgary after a brief illness on November 7, 2014.
Stan began his life-long love of horses working the land on the family farm in Saskatchewan. The family was musical and he started playing traditional tunes on the guitar at age 7 and never quit. Later he would become an accomplished musician, mastering several instruments and becoming known for playing the fiddle and both the stand-up and jazz bass. He moved to the Calgary area in 1946, and worked various labor jobs, mostly in construction. Eventually he took a job with AGT as a Senior Storesman, and was a loyal employee until retirement at age 62. Stan also played in “The Lariats”, a country and western band, for 25 years. After retirement, he continued to play his music, travelling and pursuing business interests in a car dealership and partnering in a curbside auto repair shop and in an at-home instrument repair. Stan was proud of his Metis heritage.
Stan is survived by his loving wife Violet and children Daryl (Karen) and Cindy; by the children from his first marriage: Judy (Ken), Wendy (Richard), and Cathy (Brian); by his brother, Sam (Doris); and by 10 grandchildren.
A Celebration of Stan’s Life will be held at the Chapelhow Canadian Legion Branch 284 (606 – 38 Avenue N.E.) on Saturday, November 29, 2014 from 1 – 5 p.m. Interment will take place at Brancepeth, SK (TBA). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
