August 22, 1969 – February 8, 2013
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Peter Yost, a heroic and beloved son, brother, and uncle on February 8, 2013 at the age of 43.
He is lovingly remembered by his mother Elaine Yost, his father Peter (Norma) Yost, his brothers Sean (Michelle) Yost, Cory (Amanda) Yost, his much loved niece Olivia, his uncles Robert (Lori) Littlejohns, Gordon (Gudrun) Littlejohns, Karl (Susie) Yost, Gunter (Evelina) Yost, his cousins Sarah (Daryl) Bedford, Matthew Littlejohns, Steven Littlejohns, David Littlejohns, Werner (Susie) Plangg, Heidi Plangg, his roommate and friend David Richards and many, many friends. Michael was predeceased by his grandparents Rev. Dr. Donald Littlejohns and Evelyn Littlejohns, Karl and Gertrude Yost, his Aunt Trudy and Uncle Richard Yost.
Michael was born in North Vancouver, B.C. At the age of 9 he was diagnosed with a rare condition called Coffin-Lowry Syndrome. It was expected his life expectancy would be severely limited but he embraced his life with great joy and enthusiasm and lived all of his 43 years to the full. His passion was his family and his many friends with whom he shared a wide variety of activities. As an advocate for others who have disabilities he participated in presentations to the Medical School, Universities, and schools. His grace and compassion for others, his generosity, sense of humor and insightful intuition were inspiring to all who knew him. In his early years he spent happy times at the family cabin at Lake Windermere where he spent hours in the boat and was the designated spotter for water-skiing. Because of the skill and commitment of the medical professionals, his friends, family and support staff, the dreams he had for his life were mostly fulfilled. He loved his home, animals, music, swimming, camping, fishing, skiing, horseback-riding, motor cycles rides, photography, concerts, being the host, and parties. He went white water rafting, rode in the Ride for Sight, and had a glider ride. The many challenges he faced with his health became significant as he grew older. Over the years he dealt with seizures, meningitis, a spinal cord injury, the loss of his mobility, many hospitalizations at the “good hotel” Foothills Hospital, the need to be fed through a tube and many pneumonias. Through it all with the strength of his spirit, encouragement and support of his friends and family he always adjusted to the loss of his independence and pulled through. During the last six months of his life he regained enough strength to attend several concerts, be more active in the community and participate in Christmas celebrations which was his favorite time of the year. The family will be forever grateful to the many people too numerous to mention who were involved in his life and for the care and compassion that he received.
A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held at First Assembly Pentecostal Church (6031 Elbow Drive S.W.
