October 7, 1930 – April 25, 2012
Rita Wyman (nee MacLennan) passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 following a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Rita had a humble beginning being born in a farmhouse at West Cape, Prince Edward Island. Her early education was in a single room school house and she later attended business college in Summerside, PEI. As a young woman, she worked as a legal secretary and as a waitress in Summerside, summer lodges in the Laurentians, and in New York City.
In 1953, Rita, her brother Clayton, and four friends embarked on a road trip bound for Vancouver. They got as far as Calgary where Rita met the love of her life, Herbert (Bert) Wyman, Q.C., then an articling student at Nolan, Chambers (now Bennett Jones). Following a courtship of two years, punctuated by an absence to work once more In New York City, Rita and Bert were married in July, 1955. Rita immediately settled down to focus her energy raising a family. She was a dedicated homemaker keeping an organized and spotless house. She was equally devoted to her family, sometimes advocating for her children with the ferocity of a mother bear. Her high standards instilled in her young family the virtues of honesty, commitment and working to the best of one’s ability.
Rita was proud of her appearance and loved dressing in the latest fashion. She also loved the excitement of travel and enjoyed many vacations traveling across Canada, to destinations in the US, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa and Asia. In the latter decades of her life, MS progressively impaired the quality of her life. Her fierce will to survive gave her the strength to battle the ravages of the disease until her 82nd year. Rita is predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Adelaide MacLennan and her younger brother, Clayton MacLennan.
She is survived by her loving and care giving husband of 57 years, Bert; her children Richard (Terry Wright), Michael (Tana), and Ann Tyler (Rory); and her grandchildren Aveleigh, Carla, Brynna, Sean, Daniel and Blake. She is also survived by her youngest brother Laurids (Alma). The family would like to thank the staff at the Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore for the care they provided during the final stage of Rita’s life.
