WOOD, Sharon Adele

September 3, 1941- North Battleford, SK
August 23, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Sharon Wood beloved wife of Ken Wood of Calgary, AB, passed away on August, 23 2013 at the age of 71 years.

Sharon Adele Wood always looked put together. But the most beautiful thing about Sharon was how beautiful she made everyone around her feel.

Sharon was born September 3rd, 1941 in North Battleford, SK. She married Ken Wood in September 1962. They celebrated their 50th anniversary last year, but Ken and Sharon were not mere partners in life. They were business partners, too, in Calgary for 25 years. Yet even in the light of this long partnership, Sharon maintained a sovereign spirit that she passed along to her daughters Melanie and Heather. In fact, her daughters always joked that Sharon raised them to be far too strong and independent for them to ever get married.

Her wit was legendary. Sharon loved to laugh and crack wise, but she saved most of her love for her daughters. Melanie and Heather were the most important people in Sharon’s life. She would do anything for those girls. Her affection for them extended to their friends. Anyone who needed a place to stay knew they were welcome to spend the night at the Wood’s. And so they did, filling couches and sleeping bags in the basement during teenage sleepovers.

Sharon nurtured a life long devotion to major league baseball, especially to the Blue Jays, and if there was a game on, every television in house would be tuned in. Sharon and her husband Ken even planned their vacations around the Jays’ schedule.

Sharon and Ken retired from the family business in 1999. They opted for a Snowbird’s life, fleeing Calgary’s winters for the heat of Arizona. Sharon spent her desert days wandering the shopping malls, sitting with Ken at his favourite coffee shop, or laughing into the early morning hours with her amazing friends. They will miss her kindness, her companionship, and her sharp sense of humour.

Sharon passed away late evening, on August 23, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Sharon is survived by her husband Ken Wood, her daughters Melanie and Heather Wood, her sister Linda Jones, neice Julie Brose, nephews Trevor Jones and Kelly Brose (and grand-puppies Kallie-Bear and Huxley).

There will be a celebration of Sharon’s life on September 3rd at the Saskatoon Berry Farm, Calgary, AB from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. http://www.saskatoonfarm.com/. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

A second celebration will be held in Mesa, Arizona this winter.

In living memory of Sharon Wood, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  1. Carol and Lee Ballantyne :

Ever since we first met Sharon in Georgetown in the 1970s we knew she was someone special and wonderful. Even though it was many years before we reconnected with Sharon and Ken in Arizona, her sense of humour and friendship made us feel like it was only yesterday that we were together. And we feel blessed that we took part in her wedding anniversary celebration last year. It was a day filled with laughter. As usual. Our thoughts are with Ken and the girls in this time of remembrance.

I have come to this website several times, but have never been able to put into words what was in my heart. Being friends for almost fifty years, pretty much makes us family, so it’s difficult to put our feelings into a few words. Sharon & I shared so much over the years….our desire for children of our own, recipes, shopping trips, lunches, and the list goes on. We let the ‘boys’ beat us in Kaiser for eleven years before we finally decided to show them that the ‘girls’ could be fearsome opponents. Knowing that my friend was as near as the phone was comforting & now I miss those calls so very much. Thank you for being my friend, and until we meet again, I will treasure every memory.
