WINTERS, Spencer Seymour

August 8, 1927- Millertown, NL
November 22, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Spencer Seymour Winters of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2013 at the age of 86 years.

Spencer was raised in Millertown, Newfoundland. He wed his beloved Evelyn, also a Newfoundlander, from Brookfield, Bonavista Bay, in 1951. They moved to New Brunswick and raised their four children in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as Spencer worked for General Electric’s large appliance division training sales people. In 1967 the family returned to St. John’s, Newfoundland, where Spencer built a successful, highly respected industrial heating and ventilation supply business. He worked as a manufacturers’ representative for companies such as Mark Hot and Volcano. After retirement in 1988 Evelyn and Spencer sold their home and travelled North America in their motor home, settling first in Florida for a few years, Wasaga Beach, Ontario for eight years, finally coming to the Calgary area in 2002. Spencer loved family first, his kind encouraging conversations were an oasis of support for children, grandchildren, extended family and a large circle of friends. His humour was uplifting. His faith was paramount. He actively contributed to the United Church of Canada wherever he lived. In St. John’s, at St. James United Church his hand drawn plans where used to extend the upper balcony seating area and he enhanced the pipe organ wall design. In Wasaga Beach, Spencer and Evelyn were founding members of the Wasaga Beach United Church and he served on the committees that actively pursued a location and the rebuild that lead to the existing church building today. Spencer volunteered with the Kiwanis, especially the music festivals, as he loved music. He instilled that love in all his children. He sang and played guitar and piano. Spencer’s many talents and interests included carpentry, cooking, sketching, painting, calligraphy, journaling, reading, photography, collecting coins and stamps, and researching both the Winters’ and Blackwood’s family trees. He also loved playing cards, making board games, and toys for the family, as well as watching his family’s sports, graduations, and musical performances. He enjoyed camping, picnics and nature walks often including grandchildren while watching for wildlife. The birds, deer, and walks with Evelyn at the Boland farm in Hill Spring, Alberta, brought immense joy. Dad or “Pops/Poppy,” will be greatly missed by his treasured family who wish to thank Dr. F. Oosman, the staff at Calgary Foothills Hospital and Bethany Care Center in Cochrane, for their compassionate care.

Besides his loving wife of 62 years, Evelyn (nee Blackwood), Spencer is remembered by his daughter Sandra and her son Joseph of Bradford, Ontario; Peter, wife Christine and daughters Laura and Mary of St. John’s, Newfoundland; Brenda (Boland), husband Craig and daughters Cassandra and Breanna of Calgary, Alberta; Karen (Gregory), husband Hank and children Mikayla, Brennan, and Eric of Bowmanville, Ontario. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Becky (Abel) and Carol (Wilfred), and an extended family. He was predeceased by parents Frederick and Emily Winters, brothers Ches, Abel and Wilfred, as well as sisters Laura (King) and Eslie (Taylor).

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at 11 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca, to the Canadian Lung Association at www.lung.ca, or to a charity of your choice. 1. GEORGE & MAXINE KEAN, LABRADOR CITY :

    The Winters Family
Sincere sympathy at the loss of a dear husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. Although words cannot ease the pain and sorrow you are all feeling at this time, may you find comfort in knowing our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
I have vivid and happy memories of all the joyful times at Uncle Spence & Aunt Evelyn’s home when as a young lad I would spend some of my summer holidays at Brookfield. You could always feel so much love in the family and Uncle Spence had so much patience with us young kids who were always in mischief. I will always treasure these happy times.
Hold on to all your special memories,
    Love always
    George & Maxine

To: Karen, Hank, Mikayla, Brennan, Eric, Evelyn & Karen’s siblings

Kevin and I would like to offer our sincere condolences on the passing of a patient, kind, loving father, father-in-law, grandparent and husband. We had the pleasure of being in Spencer’s presence on just a few occasions but we fondly remember his interesting conversation and quiet, unassuming manner. The most memorable occasion was the day he walked Karen down the aisle and she married my brother. I owe him a great debt for the gift of my sister, Karen, who I love and cherish. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers as you deal with the grief of losing a loved one. Take consolation in the assurance Spencer is in a better place and will always be with you in your hearts.

We are sorry to hear of Uncle Spence’s passing. He was a very gentle, kind and caring Uncle and whenever we saw your Mom and Dad, they both would greet us with open arms and kindness. When we visited them, while they lived in Florida, your Dad made sure that he took us to as many attractions and events that would fit in our schedule.
May your many happy memories help comfort you!
    Love,
Your niece, Marjorie (and Bob) Gray

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Uncle Spence. A dearly loved and respected gentleman, a second father to me when I first left home at age 17. He exemplified patience, kindness, understanding and love of family. A role model of positive work ethics. The guidance he provided me in my tender years stayed with me throughout my life.

I know Aunt Evelyn that you will have daily reminders of the love shared life you had with Uncle Spence. May those beautiful memories comfort you.

Sandra, Peter, Brenda, and Karen (my soul sister), find time in the quiet moments of your days to be comforted knowing your father is watching and loving you from above.

Thinking of you and wishing I could be with you in person. May my love for each of you surround you today and every day.

  16. Peter & Rita Premich (Wasaga Beach, Ontario) :

    Dear Evelyn & Family

It is with a heavy heart & great sadness, we write these words of condolence for this wonderful and upstanding man. Spence Winters was “A Gentleman’s Gentleman!”- Beautiful inside & out!

A favourite memory of ours is when Spence & Evelyn spent the better part of an afternoon sitting by my (Rita) side, enchanting both of us with so many interesting stories, while I was re-couperating from a difficult eye surgery, forced to hold my head horizontally to the ground for weeks on end.
Even though Spence tired easily, was feeling the ill effects of COPD, and already planning his move west where a drier climate predicted to help his condition, he insisted on staying a bit longer.

He was instrumental in founding our “Great Little Wasaga Beach United Church”, so today it’s only fitting that we say: “Thank-You Spence – For Leaving Us With Such An Amazing Legacy”
We will always be grateful & will forever associate Spence (& Evelyn) Winters with W.B.U.C.

We Thank God for placing you on our path in life!

Deepest Condolences & Warmest Regards – From Peter & Rita Premich

    The Winters family.
Uncle Spence is a figure I can remeber back to a very young age. Although distance kept us apart many times, he was always a much closer family member then distance could create. I can recall times from Ontario to their time in Florida where he was always a caring and respectable figure that caused me to pause and think about how I acted, and made me a better person. The ways he cared for my family in our times of stress showed how he always placed the needs of others above his own.

  40. Keith Lockhart :

Evelyn & family, Our heartfelt condolences on the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. It was a sad and difficult moment when I received the call from Bill King to inform me that Spence had passed. Although we knew he was experiencing deteriorating health it was still painful to hear the news. As so many others, I’m sure have said, my experience with Spence was that he was truly a gentleman in every sense of the word. A man of faith and convictions. When I interviewed with the congregation to become the Pastor, Spence was very concerned about my theology and how liberal or conservative I might be.
When the decision was made he welcomed me into the church at Wasaga Beach United with a huge smile and very firm handshake and presented me with the keys to the church , which I still have and use to this day 13 years later. Spence was an inspiration to us all with his quiet demeanor and leadership. He will be missed and remembered fondly as one of our founding members and leaders. I trust Spence has already heard these words from his Lord and Saviour: “Well done thou good and faithful servant.”
    Blessings, Pastor Keith & Margaret

We both recall vividily and often our visit not so long ago, when Elizabeth met you both for the first time. How Spence enjoyed to reminisce about our earlier days in Millertown, St. James United. and Saint John. As Spence loved and enjoyed his family, he enjoyed people–he was a real ‘people person’ and a mentor to many, including those earlier times. Among his tremendous accomplishments his research and providing a copy of the Winters family tree is cherished by all of us.

We were saddened to hear of Uncle Spence’s passing and our thoughts are with you as you go through this difficult period. My own limited contact with him was always fun and relaxing, and at the same time inspiring. I grew up admiring him, largely from how my parents and older brothers and sisters spoke of him and responded to him; we all looked up to him then, and continued to do so as adults. The world has lost an extraordinary man, yet he remains with us through the example he set: his warmth and generosity, his intelligence, his inquiring mind, his diligence, his honesty, his sense of humour. He will be missed by many, but he has left a wonderful legacy, and an indelible mark that makes us all a little better.
