WINTER – Laurence A.

1918 – 2011

On Monday, July 11, 2011, Calgary lost a proud lifelong citizen.

Laurence (Larry) Winter was born in Calgary on December 11, 1918. He lived his entire life in the community of Mount Royal, and will be remembered as a passionate storyteller with tales dating back to our city’s beginnings.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara (née Barry), and his children Nadia (Harry) Pelton, Noel (Mary Anne) and Diana (Len) Johnson. He is predeceased by his parents Austin and Grace Winter and his loving sister Grace Cloakey. He adored his grandchildren, Sarah (Jeroen Thompson), Meaghan (Brice MacGregor), Lauren, Alexandra, Julia, Paige, Taylor, Georgia and Grace, and great-grandchildren Katherine and Rebecca, who will continue to celebrate the life and memory of their Damps.

Upon graduation from Western Canada High School, Larry was among the first Calgarians to enlist, and served as an officer in the Calgary Highlanders during World War II. Upon returning to Calgary after the war, Larry met Barb and they began raising their family. A true entrepreneur, Larry spent his professional life in a number of industries, including land development, industrial construction and oil and gas. He valued his lifelong relationship with the Pallesen family farming at Beynon.

Larry enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent summers at his beloved Sylvan Lake, where friends and locals will miss Old Man Winter’s enthusiasm for his legendary do-it-yourself projects. Special friends at the lake include Gail Morrisroe and Ian Harding, as well as countless friends of children and grandchildren who enjoyed the cabin over the years.

A celebration of life will be held with family and close friends at a later date. Larry was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Calgary South, founded in 1956. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Larry’s name to support Rotary’s ongoing initiatives. Forward condolences through

In living memory of Laurence Winter, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

  5. Edward G McMullan :

My sincere condolences on Larry’s passing. He must have had a premonition as I was so fortunate to hear from him recently. I will always remember our wonderful tight-knit group of friend in Altadore – 38th Avenue SW. Larry was always there to help and supervise sidewalks, garages etc. What a big heart and a true friend. He will be sorely missed by all your friends and former neighbours.

  6. Sam and Jerry McAndrews :

I think Larry was the only one who ever called me gorgeous(maybe because he couldn’t remember my name, but it worked for me 🙂 ( ie Sam, not Jer). I was always grateful. We won’t miss him like Gail will, but the passing of the old guard at the lake is sad and makes us realize how quickly time passes. Hope good memories see you through when you’re missing him.
Our sympathies to all the generations of Winters.

    In friendship,

    Sam and Jerry McAndrews

My heartfelt condolances to you and your family on the loss of your Dad.

My special memory of him was when I was renovating 2201 Hope Street. He came up the driveway and wanted to see what was happening to his old homestead. I gave him a tour and he shared wonderful stories about being born and growing up in the house, how the neighbors had winter covered (the Snow family, the Freise(Freeze) family, and of course the Winters), as well as his memories of a beautiful, manicured lawn managed by the gardener from the Golf and Country Club! A few weeks later, he arrived with fabulous old photos of the house covering four decades — from the time it was built until his father passed away. I showed everyone that visited those wonderful photos and when I moved down the street, I passed them along for the new owners to appreciate a special bit of Mt. Royal history.

Your Dad frequently checked in with me after our intial introduction — I always enjoyed and valued his stories of times gone by. His passing marks the end of an era.
