WINTER, Barbara A. (nee Barry)

On Tuesday, May 7, 2013, Barbara died peacefully at home surrounded by family. Barb was born in Lacombe AB on October 4, 1926. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Laurence, in July 2011.

To everyone who knew Barb, she was a woman of elegance and grace. In her last months, she could be seen on her porch wearing her fur coat and oversized sunglasses enjoying the beauty of the Elbow River valley.

Barb’s enduring legacy will be in the many joys and accomplishments of her nine grandchildren. She instilled in them a passion for learning, always listening and encouraging their dreams. She nurtured a special relationship with each grandchild, all of whom have had the privilege of growing into adulthood supported by Nana’s kind and accepting presence in their lives.

Barb was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her children Nadia (Harry Pelton), Noel (Mary Anne), and Diana (Leonard Johnson), her grandchildren Sarah (Jeroen Thompson), Meaghan (Brice MacGregor), Lauren, Allie, Julia, Paige, Taylor, Georgia, and Grace, and great grandchildren Katherine, Rebecca and Gavin. Barb is survived by her sisters Lynn Kanngiesser (Jack) of Lacombe and Rose Miles of Red Deer and their families. She also leaves behind her deep friendships with Gail Morrisroe and the Harding and Pallesen families.

We express our gratitude to our caregivers, Dory and Diana, and the Enhanced Health Services team for their compassion and friendship. We also thank Bonnie Emmerson and the Palliative Home Care Unit of Alberta Health Services.

At Barb’s request there will be no formal service. A family remembrance was held on May 16. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be directed to the Calgary Seniors’ Resource Society (, an agency supporting seniors to stay in their homes. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Barb Winter, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  4. Angela Hauser :

It was an honour and a pleasure to get to know Barb. I was her dental hygienist this past year or two and even though I didn’t see her often I always looked forward to our appointments together. She was a lovely person and I will miss her.
    Much love, Angela
