Wilson, Kathleen Marie “Kathy”, (nee Walsh)

December 1, 1943 – December 14, 2014

Kathleen passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary the morning of Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the age of 71.

Kathleen was born on December 1, 1943 in Regina, Saskatchewan. After completing her schooling in Regina, she studied nursing at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, graduating in 1964. Her nursing career took her to Montreal, Quebec, Macon, Georgia, where her daughter was born in 1982, Grand Junction, Colorado (1985-1989), Kalispell, Montana (1989-2001), Regina, Saskatchewan (2001-2005) and back to Calgary where she finished her career in palliative home care, retiring in 2010. During those 46 years in nursing she touched many lives and made many friends along the way.

Answering to the name “Cupa”, she was an adoring and doting grandmother to her grandchildren. In the last three years she became a huge lacrosse fan, attending every single lacrosse game that her grandkids had and then counting down until the next Calgary Roughnecks game. She was one of the loudest fans in the stands. She was there for every goal the kids scored and was first in line to get a front row seat at the grandkids school concerts.

Kathleen is survived by her only child Melanie Burnsed; son-in-law Martin Burnsed; her grandkids Jaden, Kaleb and Gabby Burnsed; brother Ronald Walsh from Ottawa, ON; her nieces Kristina and Michele; and many cousins both in Canada and the United States. She is predeceased by her parents Lloyd and Melanie Walsh.

Kathleen’s Funeral Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Airdrie, 300 Towerlane Drive, Airdrie, Alberta) on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through A special thank you to Dr. Karima Ali, who went above and beyond what any other doctor did for her as well as the staff at Peter Lougheed Hospital and AHS EMS crew for their extraordinary care and support in her final hours.

In living memory of Kathleen Wilson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Airdrie, 300 TOWERLANE DRIVE, AIRDRIE, AB. Telephone: 403-948-1100

  1. Brenda LeBlanc :

I am so sorry to read of your mothers passing. I worked with her and we opened the Fanning Centre in 1977. She and I were soul mates as we graduated the same year. She from the Holy and I from the CGH. She was always happy and fun loving. Your mother was very caring. My thoughts are with you and your family.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Kathy and I were classmates and became friends during our training years at the Holy Cross School of Nursing . After graduation and moving to Edmonton, we shared an apartment and began our first jobs at the U of A hospital. Those were memorable years. Kathy was a wonderful nurse, a great person and a fun friend. She will be greatly missed Gaylene

It is with regret that I read of Kathy’s passing. I was a classmate of Kathy’s at The Holy Cross and remember those years fondly. We had our 50th reunion for the class of September 1964 and we all missed Kathy’s presence. I send my deepest condolences to her family.

  6. Doreen McKinnon :

    Melanie and Family,
I was very sad to read of your mother’s passing. I worked with her in her final nursing position as a Palliative Home Care Nurse. I was working in NE Calgary and she worked some relief shifts in that area. Your mom was a very kind, compassionate, competent nurse with a great sense of humor. We always knew the clients would be well cared for when she was working. Your mom and I shared some common roots since we both were Saskatchewan girls; I went to high school in Regina and University in Saskatoon.

My Condolences to you and your family,
    Doreen McKinnon
