October 30, 1933 – August 4, 2012
Siegfried Wieser beloved husband of Joan Xauen Wieser (nee Quick) of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the age of 78 years.
Born in Linz, Austria, Sig and his brother were raised by their mother Michaella Josefa Burgstaller-Kaufmann. Whilst completing his education, he worked as a member of the Landestheater Opera Chorus in Linz. Sig received a diploma in Electrical Engineering, and worked at the newly rebuilt Voest Steel Works. Immigrating to Canada in 1955, Sig became a Canadian citizen in 1965. He worked for Shell Oil for seven years, returned to university and graduated with an Honours B.Sc. degree in Physics. In 1966, after completing two years for his M.Sc. in Mathematics and Astronomy, he embarked on a distinguished career as Executive Director at the Centennial Planetarium (1966-1986) and Executive Director of the Alberta Science Centre (1986-1991).
Sig was a founding member of many of Calgary’s cultural institutions and received several awards. After serving seven years with C.R.A.F., he proudly received the Calgary Immigrants of Distinction Arts and Culture Award in 2002 and for several years thereafter did school visitations as a speaker with the Dominion Institute.
Besides his loving wife Joan of fifty years, he also leaves behind his, sons Leo (Becky) and Bernie (Lisa); grandchildren, Sasha, Erin, Patrick, Somea and Pierson; brother Helmut (Meta); niece Caroline (Paul); and nephew Michael.
