WHITEHEAD, Roderick James F.C.A.

May 21, 1929 – September 15, 2012

Roderick James Whitehead, husband of Nancy Whitehead died peacefully in Calgary on Saturday, September 15, 2012.

Roderick is survived by his wife Nancy (née Ogle) his children Michael (Debbie) Whitehead, Peter Whitehead (partner Jeffrey Goth), grandchildren; Trevor, Lauren and Amanda; and sister Nancy Edwards. Roderick was predeceased by his brother Philip Whitehead.

Roderick was born in Toronto and attended Rosedale Public School, U.T.S., and Trinity College at the University of Toronto. He married Nan in 1953 and in 1956 they moved west so Rod could open the office of Coopers and Lybrand Chartered Accountants. He spent much of his life, travelling the world, skiing, playing tennis, and enjoying his summers with his family and friends at the cottage.

Rod had many close friends. He had an inimitable way of making everyone he met feel special. Everyone who met Rod shared the same feelings; he was a special man. Constantly loving and kind, he walked through life a happy man, whistling along as he looked at the splendour of it all. We are all richer for having known him.

Rod was cared for by a host of angels at McKenzie Towne Care Centre for the last four years with Alzheimer’s disease.
May he now be with all of the other angels.

Funeral Services will be held at Christ Church (3602 – 8th Street S.W.) Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Roderick Whitehead a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

Every summer over the last 38 years, Lionel and I always looked forwards to seeing you both at Premier. Rod you always made us feel special while in your presence. We will miss you, xox

  8. Rod Whitehead had a kindly nature and his natural tendency to be easy going was infectious. I played golf with him many years ago, a partner/manager outing he did out of obligation rather than enthusiasm no doubt as I recall golf was not quite his thing. He was given to an occasional errant drive and more than one missed putt but “Oh dear” and a nonchalant chuckle was the worst the cruel game could coax from Rod’s temperate disposition. On another occasion we ski-raced each other at Sunshine Mountain and it was no contest as Rod was a far better skier (and I was weighed down by denim) so he slowed down so as not to embarrass his competition. He was quite a guy.
I am sad to hear of Rod’s passing and I extend my condolences to Nan and the Whitehead family.

  11. I was fortunate to know Rod through my employment with C&L in 1977 and 1978. Rod had a zest for life both personal and professional and I still think of his immense sense of humour and work / life balance. I remember him fondly and extend my sincere regrets to his family for the loss of this classic gentleman.

  14. Nancy, My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Apart from a short visit with you and Rod sometime in the 80s when BB, Don & Mary Huggett and I were in Calgary, I have nothing but wonderful memories of Rod as a fraternity brother in good old Zeta Psi, football when we at UCC playing UTS, and the knowledge that I had met a really good guy. His laugh was infectious, his friendship sincere and I will always remember him that way. I realize his last few years were difficult but my memories are of a super guy in his 20s who never grew older in my mind. Bless you Nancy.

  17. Gordon Mollenhauer :

    Dear Nan
Rod & I were classmates at UTS and played on the same football & hockey teams. I think of John Leishman,Dick Sadleir, Bill Bartlett, Tom Symons, and so many others. But Rod was the spark. Great years. Good times.
Memories jump to mind. Do you remember when the Mollenhauers lived on one side of the Rattray Estate and your family home was on the other?
I’ve been happily remarried low these 20 years but Sue and I keep in touch. She is in a seniors’ home; high spirited but not too mobile. My next task is to tell her about Rod’s passing. As you know they were quite close at one time. She will be very upset and want me to have sent her love to you.
The last four years must have been very difficult for you Nan. On the other hand, you were blessed with a partner who, in his time and in his own way was a giant among men. That rare breed who truly brought joy to every one who met him.
    our heartfelt condolences Nan.

  20. Hello…I am sending this message of condolence on behalf of my father, Lawrence (Larry) Pastorius, F.C.A. I let him know today of Rod’s passing. He and Rod had many great conversations via long distance. I worked for a very brief time in the Calgary office with Charlie English.
My father always spoke highly of Rod and truly valued his friendship.
I understand from a daughter’s perspective what your family has been through for the past few years. My father nursed my mother at home for 12 of the 14 years she suffered with Alzheimer’s. She passed away In January 2011.
Our heartfelt condolences to you, Nancy and family. Our prayers are with you going forward.

Nancy Walker on behalf of Larry.

  21. Nan,
I saw Rod’s notice in the Globe, and want to extend my sympathy. I knew of Rod’s Alzheimers some time ago, and I sense that death is a release, but it is still a sad loss. I remember Rod as one of the bridesmaids in Trial By Jury at UTS. That was a long time ago. My best wishes to you and your family.

  22. Hello Nan and family,…Indeed sad to hear of Rod’s passing.A wonderful person as well as a notable and accomplished team leader throughout his C&L career. Numbered among the best of the “rehashers” when it came to business and family stories even though there was the “occasional” embelishment. I always looked forward to visits to the Calgary office. Defense was the only strategy throughout the entire visit! Knowing and working with Rod was one of those memorable gifts that we all received walking along with him on his life journey. Keep smiling Rod. Nan,peace to you and family. Dick Cappon

  23. Nancy and Family,
I was fortunate to work for Rod in the early 80’s at Coopers & Lybrand in Calgary. Always a gentleman, Rod was a leader by example always. He truly shined during the significant economic downturn in Calgary in 82/83 when most other CA firms had significant layoffs and only C&L stood by its people and did not follow that lead. I will always have fond memories of my time working for Rod.

  24. Hello Nan…sorry to read about Rod’s passing, but maybe it was a blessing since he suffered from Alzheimer’s for a long period.
Will remember laughing with you two many, many times and your anointing me with the name Babo.
We moved to Victoria in 1996.

Condolences to the family… Barry Thomas
