WHITE, Robert William

September 17, 1939 – February 9, 2017

Robert William White, beloved husband of Pat White of Calgary, passed away on February 9, 2017 at the age of 77 years.

Robert was born in Star City, Saskatchewan in 1939 to William and Caroline White, and grew up on a farm with two sisters, Betty and Bernice. Robert enjoyed his school years, attending the University of Saskatchewan, University of Alberta, and the University of Calgary, where he obtained a Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Science, and a Masters of Education in Psychology. He started his teaching career in Grouard, Alberta, a predominately native vocational school, and it was here that he met his wife of forty-eight years.

He worked as a counselor, an industrial art teacher, and for the Education Department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (1972-1991). In his retirement he renewed his passion for grain farming, buying land in Parkland, Alberta and farmed from 1984-2009. Rob and Pat travelled extensively visiting numerous countries around the world. In 2009 they bought a condo on the beach of Mazatlan, Mexico, where they spent their winters. Robert joined the Chinook hiking group in 2012, attended his ‘Senators’ meetings on Saturdays, and enjoyed many hands of Bridge with friends. Pat and Robert have been members of McDougall United Church for many years. Family and friends will remember Rob’s reserved nature. He lived his life with grace and class and stood by his values with integrity and veracity. His socialist policies were not only verbally promoted but were a lived legacy of his life.

Rob is survived by his wife, Pat; his two children, Cori White (Houston) and Barrett White (Calgary); granddaughter, Savannah Mulvey-White (Houston); and sister Bernice Dobrowolski (Regina). He is also survived by three sisters-in- law, Gwyneth (Mike) Cochlan, Sheryl (Arden) Fath, and Olwyn (Cal) Cochlan all of Stavely; and thirteen nieces and nephews and their families. Rob was predeceased by his parents; brother Richard White; sister and brother-in-law Betty and Fred Love.

The family would like to thank the staff on Unit 47 of the Foothills Hospital and Dr. Heng and staff of the Tom Baker Clinic for their dedicated care.

A Celebration of Robert’s Life will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E.) on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice. Condolences may be forwarded through
