WHITE, Derry

December 9, 1944 – August 24, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Derry White on Friday, August 24, 2012.

Derry was born in Calgary and graduated from Western Canada High School before earning his bachelor’s degree in education at Simon Fraser University.

Derry’s exploits were legendary in his youth. A gifted athlete, Derry excelled at team sports but really shone as one of Canada’s premiere spring-board and tower divers. Derry’s high school and university pals will always remember his boundless energy and great sense of humour. The girls were smitten, the guys were jealous and his pals just tried to keep up. Willows, Whitley, Myers, MacLeod, Coach Patrick and especially Edwards – just part of his old crew all with memories of a lifetime thanks to Derry. We’ll miss you kid!

Derry married Ora in 1979. Together camping and canoeing became their favourite pastimes and was where you would find them every weekend. Derry was a “Mountain Man” and always happiest if he was by the river with his fishing rod and campfire. Derry was a gourmet cook and he loved to create fabulous meals for his friends and family.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Shauna (Rob) Ferguson (nee Stevenson); son Scott Stevenson; grandchildren Ella and Joey Ferguson; mother-in-law Trudy MacDonald and Robert Gilmar of Lethbridge; brothers and sisters-in-law, Don Strath of Calgary, Darrell and Karla Wenhardt of San Diego, and Doug and Joanne Bobinec of Wrentham; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Derry was predeceased by his beloved wife Ora; mother Leslie deCarteret; father Bev White; and sister Delsey Strath (nee White).

We will be having a gathering of friends and family to celebrate Derry’s life on Saturday, September 15, 2012 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Bob and Debbie MacLeod’s house. Please email for the address. Forward condolences through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549,

Condolence Messages

  1. All the names here are un-known except Delsey. So much time has passed …/ Derry and I had good times, while in Rideau. He’s in a far better place now than ever before.

  2. Very late condolences to the family. Derry and I were diving colleagues and friends at Simon Fraser University. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. We were last in touch in March of 2011. I am very sad to have not had an opportunity to have attended the celebratory gathering. We were in touch intermittently over the years and likely would have been so more regularly except for Derry’s apparent resistance to the use of computer technology. He certainly was regularly in my thoughts as I recall experiencing much of what is set out in the obituary. I will post his passing on the SFU Swimming and Diving Alumni web site at: Best to you my friend.
