WHALEN, Thomas (Tom) Michael

April 25, 1933 – May 2, 2012

Thomas (Tom) Michael Whalen passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the Southwood Hospice with his loving partner Marie at his side.

Tom was born in Halifax, NS on April 25, 1933 and moved with his family to Victoria, BC in 1950. Though he adored the west coast, Tom ventured to Calgary with his best friend to pursue a career. In Calgary, he found his first love: Jan, and his second love: Hockey. He laced up for many teams and then took readily to coaching. Known as “Coach”, his connection to Junior Hockey as well as Oldtimers’ Hockey played a significant and substantial role in Tom’s life. “His” teammates were a group of people that were more than players and more than friends; they were family. Tom enjoyed not only the game of hockey with this group of brothers and their families… they bowled and curled together; went camping and fishing together; they golfed (a lot) together and had many memorable hunting trips together. They traveled, sang and danced. They savored life together!
Tom’s chosen career was in the steel industry and he proudly journeyed from welder to successful business partner. With a passion for excellence, hard work, camaraderie, and of course fun, Tom enjoyed many special friendships with his colleagues over the years, and to him, these people also became family.

A long-time and extremely active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Branch 285, Tom enjoyed the social life as well as the volunteer life at the branch. He held many executive positions, giving generously of his time. Tom had great affection for the Poppy Campaign, the Cadets, Veterans functions, committees, sporting events, concerts, dances and karaoke!

Tom always had a big smile and a warm welcome for every person that walked through the Legion’s door. He extended not only his hand but his heart, and his circle of family grew…

Tom is survived by his son Michael (Shelley); daughter Cindy (Michael); his two beautiful granddaughters Emma and Marie; and by his sisters Marie (Stanley) and Helen (Ray); and by brothers Jim and Pat (Denja). Tom will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his parents John and Mary; his brother Jack and by his beloved wife of forty-five years, Jan.

A Celebration of Tom’s Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Centennial Branch #285 (9202 Horton Road S.W.) on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the outstanding medical care of Dr. B Pujara and Dr. S.
