February 3, 1945 – Kingston, ON
March 25, 2014 – Calgary, AB
It is with great sadness that the family of Cherryl Wares announces her passing on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the age of 69 years.
Born in Kingston, ON to Muir and Ruth McDonald, Cherryl became a Calgarian when she married Don 45 years ago. She will be profoundly missed by her loving husband; her three adored children, Brennan, Carolyn (Jed), and Daniel (Molly) and a sister, Judy (David) Kerr of Ottawa, Ontario. Over the last six years Cherryl was blessed with immense joy and happiness in the company of her six GRANDchildren, Eddie, Charlotte, and Natalie Wares of Calgary and Addison, Cole, and Walker Dorfman of Larchmont, New York.
Cherryl graduated as a Radiotherapy Technician from the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, and pursued her career both in Toronto and Calgary. Once all her children were in school, Cherryl returned to her chosen field of Cancer Care as the founding Director of Volunteer Services at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and later as Director of Fund Development with the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The Tom Baker Charity Golf Classic, the Playing for Life Concert Series and the creation of the Ride to Conquer Cancer were her favourite projects. These three events have raised more than forty million dollars for Cancer Research in Alberta.
Cherryl always enjoyed many sports and outdoor activities, and was an active member of the Glencoe Club as well as the Golf Course. But perhaps her happiest summertime memories were of the 20 years spent vacationing at Priest Lake, Idaho with her family and close friends. Throughout her life, Cherryl orchestrated a variety of unique adventures and holidays, and continued to nurture her friendships of many years with unfaltering loyalty and genuine attentiveness.
The family would like to thank many people, including those at Hillhurst United Church where she found great joy in the choir, as well as the fellowship of good friends. For the health care, comfort and support that Cherryl received over the years, we would especially like to thank Dr. Keith Laatsch, Dr. Wally Temple and Dr. Paul Beck. And for the kind attention of her loving caregiver, Marilou, we are enormously grateful.
A Memorial Service will be held at Hillhurst United Church (1227 Kensington Close N.W.) on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Dr. John Pentland presiding.
