WALKER, Dr. William Thomas

December 31, 1921 – May 13, 2014

Dr. W. T. (Bill) Walker, beloved husband of Nell Walker (nee Kinash) of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the age of 92 years. Bill was born in Cranbrook, BC on December 31, 1921. He received his pilot’s license through the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during the Second World War. He was in active service with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1945 and, although he didn’t pursue his passion for flying, he would never pass up the opportunity for a ride in a small plane. He graduated from the University of Manitoba medical school in 1952 and moved with Nell to Calgary where he practiced as a family doctor for 40 years. Beginning at the Colonel Belcher Hospital, he also served at the Holy Cross Hospital, the General Hospital and Grace Hospital where he was Chief of Medical Staff. In addition to his broad general practice, he was also certified as a civil aviation medical examiner. Bill will be fondly remembered by the many patients he cared for.

Over the years Bill loved getting outside for hunting, hiking, golfing and skiing. He was a keen gardener, a voracious reader and enjoyed travels to many parts of the world from Singapore to the Seychelles. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his passion for cut glass art and painting.

He will be dearly missed by his children, Bill Walker (Donna) of Calgary, Brian Walker (Marion) of Princeton New Jersey, as well as his grandchildren, Julia, Tom and Annie. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Nell, and his sister, Edythe.

The family would like to thank Bill’s caregiver for the past number of years, Lana Voskoboinikov, as well as the doctors, caregivers and staff at the Rockyview Hospital and the Southwood Hospice for their compassionate care in his last days. At Bill’s request, there will not be a funeral service. A celebration of his life for family and friends is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a memorial donation may be made to their charity of choice.

In living memory of Dr. William Walker, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200

Dr. William Walker was our family doctor for my mother and me and also after our marriage he cared for our family many years until his retirement. Dr. Walker saved my life at the risky birth of our first son and for his kind and thoughtful help we are forever grateful. We miss him and we are pleased to have visited him for his 90th birthday. What a wonderful doctor, a great man.
