WAKELAM, Sharon Ardus Mona

August 18, 1928 – Saskatoon, SK
January 17, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Loving wife, amazing mom and grandma, respected colleague, and trusted friend, Sharon Wakelam peacefully left us at the Beverly Care Centre Glenmore in Calgary, Alberta, Friday January 17th, at the age of 85.

Daughter of Christian and Mona Smith, Sharon began her journey in Saskatoon 18 August 1928, and attended Regina Central Collegiate and the Regina Grey Nuns’ Hospital School of Nursing. She cared for her charges at the Regina Grey Nuns’ Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital Vancouver, the Arlington County Hospital in Arlington VA, and the National Defence Medical Centre in Ottawa. Eventually, she swapped the “lamp” of nursing for the lamp of learning, and attended Ottawa Teachers’ College and the University of Calgary (B.Ed with distinction), channeling her care to the education of hundreds of children at Pinecrest Public School in Ottawa, and Patrick Airlie and Sam Livingston Elementary Schools in Calgary.

Always leading the charge, she served as a Lieutenant Nursing Sister in the Canadian Army Reserve and established her heritage in both the United Empire Loyalists and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Besides being an insatiable reader, she loved quilting and dollhouse miniatures, leaving a legacy of both to her children and grand children, and was a stalwart volunteer for many years at the Spruce Meadows equestrian facility.

Sharon is survived by her husband of 62 years Don, brothers Julian (Yolande) and Derek (Susan), brother-in-law Ron Reavley, son Randy (Norma), daughters Dawn (Keith) Hunt and Janice (Kerry) Horlock, and grandchildren Christian, Karen (CJ), Kevin (Meagan), Stephanie, Katie, and Riley, great-grandson Keegan, and many nieces and nephews. Sharon was predeceased by her sister Janice Reavley.

A memorial service will be held in the spring. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222. www.albertacancer.ca/memorial.

In living memory of Sharon Wakelam, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Sharon’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff, volunteers and residents of the Beverly who showed such caring and compassion during her stay. God bless you.

  3. Lynda (Smith) & Tony Wilkie :

We were very saddened to hear of Auntie Sharon’s death. She was a very special lady and an early mentor to me when I chose to go into the field of Nursing. She was such a bright woman who studied and shared some of our family’s heritage with all of us. She was always quick to teach you how to spell a word and at times was a walking thesaurus. She often made me laugh insisting that she always be called “Auntie” instead . Consequently, I go by “Auntie” Lynda 🙂 to my Niece’s and Nephews. I was thrilled when Auntie Sharon made the long trip East from Calgary to London for Tony’s and my wedding.

Tony and I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Uncle Don and the whole extended family. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you, and especially at this time. God Bless and love always.

  4. Dear Don and family.

I was so sorry to receive Carols message today telling me of Sharon’s passing. We had so many good years at Spruce Meadows, she was my right arm. I’m just so sorry I didn’t get over to see her more often.
She was like a sister to me and know she is up in heaven with several books, and a carton of cigarettes which we both said we would take with us.
Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and will be in touch when I get home from Mexico on April 2.

  11. Dan Smith and Marian Hubley :

Dear Uncle Don, Randy, Dawn, Jan and families

I was very sad to learn the news of Aunt Sharon’s passing. Marian and I send our deepest sympathy on your loss. I have many fond memories of Aunt Sharon, from the days in the early 70’s when our families were both in Ottawa to her many years in Calgary and even back to several years ago when our family travelled to Washington to visit you while you were posted there. I always enjoyed my visits with her. She was so warm and friendly and loved to chat. She also had a great sense of humour! And she always made a point of calling or coming to visit us when she was in Ottawa visiting Dawn and Keith and their family. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother as well as aunt and great aunt and I know how much she will be missed by you and by all of us. All our thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Love,
Dan, Marian, Jamie, Kristen, Maddie and Ben

  14. Mrs.Wakelam was how I knew her. I never knew her first name, just a teacher who taught me in Patrick Airlie in the 80’s….I have thought about her since then, I think about her so much that every few months I google her name, school and teacher and I had this come up…I am so saddened that I never got a chance to tell her what a great person she is….Thank You Mrs .Wakelam for being you.
