WAITE, Cheryl Ann

September 4, 1953 – Edmonton, AB
June 14, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Cheryl Ann Waite, beloved wife of Peter of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Southwood Hospice on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the age of 59 years.

Cheryl was born on September 4, 1953 to Ralph and Janet Clarke in Edmonton. Her brother Bruce arrived about a year later in December 1954. Her mother was widowed in July 1956 when Ralph died from injuries suffered in an industrial accident. Shortly after, the family moved to the Shaganappi area of Calgary where sister Nancy was born in October of 1956.

In 1960 Cheryl’s mother Janet married Lewis C. Stevenson, at which point Cheryl was adopted and her last name changed to Stevenson. Her brother Mark was born in October of 1962. Shortly after the family moved to Northwest Calgary, where new schools and opportunities presented themselves for Cheryl. A good student, Cheryl attended Alex Ferguson, Branton and Crescent Heights schools in Calgary.

After school, Cheryl was employed by the Alberta Government for many years and eventually accepted an early retirement package from Land Titles in 1993. At that time she became an expatriate with her Engineer husband-to-be Peter and moved to Borneo where they spent three interesting years living and traveling in Southeast Asia.

Upon returning to Calgary, Cheryl became involved in numerous charity organizations including Meals on Wheels, the Alzheimer Society, Children’s Fest, Calgary Marathon and any event that needed a helping hand. Her generous spirit and loving heart were freely extended to family and friends. In addition, Cheryl truly loved her horses and cats.

Besides her loving husband Peter, Cheryl is survived by her mother Janet; brothers Bruce (Jasmine, Patrick, Rachel) and Mark (Cheryl, Kristen, Connor); sister Nancy (Gordon); Smokey the Cat and many friends. Cheryl is gone but her memory will always live within those that loved her.

In lieu of a service, a private memorial will be held for friends and family at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through

    Dear Pete & Family,
As a long time friend of Chris & Rick, we remember best when Cheryl joined one of the camping trips to Rondeau Park. Camping did not really appeal to Cheryl but she was willing to try living in the outdoors for a few nights! We are so sorry for your loss of Cheryl. We will be thinking of you as you transcend through this difficult time.
    with sympathy,
    Stan & Pam Jaworski

    Dear Peter,
My fondest memeory of Cheryl is walking around the Millarville market with Cheryl and Nancy. As Cheryl filed up with the samples so did her little cart. Eventually I would have to load the cart into her vehicle and we would enjoy her purchases at her little house.
I know the market was a high point for her.
    We will miss her company.

    Dear Peter,
She might not be with you physically but she will always be with you in your heart. I want for you to think about all of the positive things that have happened & remember happy thoughts about her. I know that it’s hard for you cause earlier in the month I had to deal with my best friends dad’s death & funeral so I know exactly what your going through right now. Cheryl was a friend of mine & I almost cried when I saw David Anderson’s email

All of us at the Children’s Festival send you our condolences. Cheryl was a great member of our team. She worked hard and with passion. We saw her just before the Festival and although ill, she still managed to bring that great sense of enthusiasm and optimism to us all. Her fellow volunteers and the staff of the Festival miss her and mourn her loss.

  12. Janet, Peter, Jas, family and many friends,

What a terrible loss for all of us. I am going to miss having my friend, her laughter, our phone calls, impromptu & SAIT lunches & shopping; she talked me into buying a pair of shoes which turned out being my favourite! Most of all; I will miss Cheryl’s upbeat zest for life.
Cheryl loved everyone,(and her Smoke) and included everyone and was there for everyone. If you were Cheryl’s friend, you were blessed. I know I was and I’m so selfishly sad for my loss. Cheryl was my friend and will live in my heart and memory forever.
