von HEYKING, Rolf Karl

November 21, 1922 – December 29, 2012

On the morning of December 29, 2012, Rolf Karl von Heyking passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary at the age of 90 years.

He was born in Riga, Latvia, on November 21, 1922. He was a member of the “Musterknaben,” who were among the first Baltic-German refugees to come to Canada after World War Two, in 1948. He married Karin Stillmark in 1959 and they raised four children in London, Ontario, and then Calgary, where the family moved in 1976. He worked for Ellis-Don Construction for over 40 years, having, as “Employee #2,” helped to build up that company. As construction superintendent, he oversaw the construction of some of Canada’s, and Calgary’s, landmarks, including Halifax International Airport, Calgary’s City Hall, and Calgary’s Banker’s Hall. Grateful to his adopted home that offered him refuge, he was one of its great builders.

He is survived by his wife Karin; his four children Barbara Olafson (Kelly Olafson), Lori von Heyking, Amy von Heyking (Lance Grigg), John von Heyking (Sonya von Heyking); eleven grandchildren Kristin, Karin, Andrea, Lindsay, Emily, Conor, Alison, Geoff, Evie, Audrey, and Sebastian; as well as his brother Fred von Heyking and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church (3527 Boulton Road N.W.) on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Rolf Heyking, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

    Dear T.Karin and Family,
We are all very sad to hear of O.Rolf’s passing. As one of the Musterknaben he had a special place in our Baltic/Canadian history. I was very young in Palmerston and O.Rolf was staying with us during the week, he was building something nearby. He would bring candy for me and called me his Lollipop. Our deepest sympathy. Reni

  6. Marianne and Mike Kraemer :

I (Marianne) will miss my APA dearly – many happy memories growing up and of the years at UWO where I resided with Apa and T. Karin sharing them with my 4 cousins! Several nice visits to Calgary subsequently created more memories. Apa always toured us around and never missed showing off some of his construction projects.
Mike remembers Apa providing him with a summer job during his university years and his generous hospitality while we resided in London.
Tante Karin, Barb, Lori, Amy and John and families- we feel your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you prepare to celebrate our Apa’s life – a life well-lived!
Marianne (“Ianne” as he would say) and Mike

I am sad to read of Rolf’s death. I have good memories of our early times in London and Hessen Road and after-the-dance parties at your house. Rolf was a truly Self-Made man. I respected him greatly. This is a difficult time for you and your family. In keeping with His courage I wish for you the strength to carry on. Wolter & Edith

Yes! This was many many years ago, before your Calgary days. The last time we saw each other was in Guelph for the Batlic Reunion. There was lots of fun and laughter. Those are happy days that stay in our memory. We think of you in these difficult days and our prayers are with you.
