April 14, 1937 – Calgary, AB
December 3, 2013 – Calgary, AB
Noreen passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2013, a Calgary girl from start to finish. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.
Noreen was born in the community of Inglewood in a large and loving family in a home that still stands, and started her schooling at Colonel Walker Elementary and Junior High. She went on to High School at Western Canada High where at she excelled at baseball and basketball. Following high school, while she was a young secretary at Shell Oil, she met the man she would marry, Jerry “Van” Vanhoutte at a Tex Beneke Band dance, where they danced the ‘home dance’ which was in those days the last dance of the night. She was the love of his life for the next sixty years. They were married at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary on January 4, 1958 and spent their honeymoon night at the American Hotel, still standing, in Fort MacLeod Alberta, on their way to Norman, Oklahoma where Van was finishing his degree in civil engineering at the University of Oklahoma and where Noreen would work in the Bursary Office. Upon retuning to Canada after graduation, Van embarked on his civil engineering career with many successes, while Noreen nurtured a growing brood starting with Charlene, followed by Lisa, Laura, Theresa, and Tom, a rambunctious crew that kept the community of Lakeview on it’s toes for a quarter of a century as they grew up. While raising this remarkable family, Noreen was well known for her many neighborhood friendships, dinner parties, and her particular talent of producing desserts such as huckleberry pie, double chocolate chip cake, and we can’t forget the famous truffles which she enjoyed making every Christmas with her daughters and granddaughters. For many years she was a valued member of the Children’s Hospital Aid Society (CHAS), a 104 year old charity that assisted children in need in the Calgary area. Noreen was a longtime member of the downtown Glencoe Club where she had a wide circle of friends and was involved in badminton, tennis, fitness and bridge.
As a member of the Glencoe Golf and Country Club she and Van had an equally wide circle of friends with whom they played many rounds of golf over the years. Noreen Vanhoutte was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, mentor, and someone who was always there when you needed a wise piece of advice.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 56 years Van; her beloved children Charlene (Rod) Love, Lisa (Mike) O’Hara, Laura Vanhoutte, Theresa (Paul) Reinhart, and Tom Vanhoutte. She was affectionately known as “Baba” to her adoring grandchildren James (fiancée Aimee Johnson), Katie and Haley Love, Jack and Tess O’Hara and Max, Griffin and Sam Reinhart. Also, her crazy feline friend, Zoey and her granddogs Molly, Rocco, Mojo, Bella, Creston and Dakota who all enjoyed her homemade dog biscuits. She is also survived by her siblings Jack Chivers, Lenore (Ron) Cameron, Harry (Marsha) Chivers, Betty (Fred) Callaway, Joan (Dave) Mayes, Bill (Anita) Chivers, Don (Sue) Chivers, brother-in-law Bob Gray and sister-in-law Ardell Chivers. She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Kathleen Chivers, her older sister Evelyn Gray and three brothers in infancy.
