It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved father, brother and uncle Dr. John van Olm M.D. who passed away on Friday, April 18, 2014 surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his children Dominique and Alexander; his sister Carina van Olm; brother Dr. Matt van Olm and their spouses John Brown and Dr. Jeannette Soriano. John was born and raised in Amsterdam and came to Canada with his family as a medical student in 1973. Graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1977, he completed his internship at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary. After many years of family practice John devoted the balance of his medical career to caring for the elderly and the chronically ill. John loved his patients and missed them dearly when illness forced him into an early retirement. John was a dedicated father, brother, and friend who was always giving of his time and attention. He was an enthusiastic student of Tibetan art and enjoyed the pleasures of life particularly morning coffees at Café Beano and weekends in the Mountains. John’s sweet nature, generosity, and eternal optimism will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched.

  1. Russel and Kathy Wood :

    To all of Dr. John’s family,

    Our deepest condolences to you. Dr. John was our doctor for many years. He was so attentive always, and came to our house in later years. We were sorry to hear he was ill. He often talked of the children and we enjoyed his visits. Our father Alvin Wood also admired him very much.

    Sincerely, Russel and Kathy Wood

  3. Michelle Cojocariu :

    For all of John’s loved ones;
    In truth no words could ever offer an assuaging measure of comfort. Perhaps, in time, multi-faceted memory will endeavour solace; a recollection from childhood, a laugh of similar echo, a familiar turn of phrase, a momento of fragrance. What feels an impossible shift of existence is, nevertheless effortlessly summitted by LOVE’s boundless authority; eternally rippling betwixt kindred souls. May all be given peace, courage, and strength in forward journeying along with bountiful watchfulness of heart to witness that those with whom we temporarily part are, in Truth, everlastingly near.

    With love and shared sorrow, Michelle/Dan/and Daniel

  4. Halley Leung :

    To all of Dr. John Van Olm’s family,
    Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences to your loss.
    Dr Van Olm was very nice to our residents and staff. I enjoyed working with him at Carewest Boyack and Fanning. He worked long hours and was willing to spend extra time and attention to our residents. I remember his kindness and gentle approach in caring for others eventhough he was battling his own sickness.
    May beautiful memories give you strength in these difficult days
