VAN DER LEE – Stuart Ross

April 12, 1960 – May 28, 2011

After a lengthy illness, Stuart passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 28, 2011 with his family by his side.

Stuart was born and lived all his life in Calgary. He will be greatly missed by his life-long friends from school and business. Stuart was renowned for his generous heart and rapier wit. He was a natural athlete, and throughout his life enjoyed playing hockey, golf and water skiing. During summers at Mabel Lake, “Big Stu”, as he was affectionately known, always had a smile on his face and always made time for one more water ski or tube ride, and room for one more at the table. Everyone was made to feel welcome, and were entertained nightly by Stuart’s amazing comedy routines, and renditions of hits from the 70’s and 80’s. But without a doubt, Stuart’s pride and joy was his family: his loving wife of thirty one years, Shirley; his children Stuart Ross (“Little Stu”), Fietje, and Garrick; and in more recent years, his daughter in law Germaeline and grandson Liam, who held a special place in his heart. We will miss his love and laughter, and his passing will take a little of the joy from all our lives.

He was the much loved husband of Shirley, father of Stuart Ross (Germaeline), Fietje and Garrick (Nataliya), and grandfather to Liam. Stuart was predeceased by his parents, Arie and Joyce. He is also survived by his mother and father in law, Marina and Jim Adamson, his sister in law and brother in law Brenda and Dave Bishop, his brothers and sisters Marilyn (Richard) Keevil, David (Kathleen), Jean (Lary Mosley), Joyce Anne (Laurie) Smith, John (Sharon), Bill (Lorna), Bruce and Katrina (Ed Bettencourt), and his many nieces and nephews and their families.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

  4. Pat, Johan, Stef & Curtis - Richmond, B.C. :

Dear Shirley, Stuart, Fietje & Garrick,
It is with very heavy hearts that we send this email to you. We loved Stuart and enjoyed seeing him every summer at Mabel. We will always remember his joking ways and carisma. He always had a “hello” for us. We only got water skiing with him a few times, he could put up a “wall”.
    We will miss him.
    Sincerely

To the van der Lee family:
It is with deep sorrow that I learned of Stuart’s passing. He was a former student of mine at HWW and then, after I retired from teaching, he was my boss at Generation Financial. He was a wonderful person and my thoughts are with you at this time of sadness. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

  9. Joan Bley (nee van der Lee) :

So shocked and an ache in my heart for you and the children. Whenever I go down memory lane I always arrive at Mabel Lake and Stu. He made every day there an adventure. From water skiing, kick the can, teaching me how to drive a standard (which I drove backwards into a mountain) also how big of a crush he had for you Shirley. I am very fortunate to have known my cousin Stu, let there be comfort for you and for all us in this huge family of ours.

    Dear Shirley and Family,
Very sorry to hear of Stu’s passing. Although I hadn’t seen him for probably 35 years, I fondly remember spending my summers at Mable Lake water skiing and getting into all sorts of mischief with my buddy Stu.
