May 14, 1933 – San Martino di Finita,
Cosenza, Calabria, Italy
January 4, 2015 – Calgary, AB
After a valiant battle with Vascular Dementia, Rosaria Orestina Vaccaro passed away on January 4, 2015 in Calgary, AB at the age of 81 years.
Orestina is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Nicola Vaccaro, children Pasqualino (twin daughters Valentina and Victoria), Elena and Manuel Vaccaro of Calgary, sisters Sister Eufemia Novello (Connecticut, USA) and Lillina Bellafronte (Calabria, Italy), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Orestina is predeceased by her parents Redentore and Elena (Ceraldi) Novello, her aunts Rosaria and Olimpia Ceraldi (San Martino di Finita), and brothers Edison and Renato Novello (Calgary).
Born in San Martino di Finita, Italy, Orestina left home at the tender age of 14 when she convinced her parents to let her become a nun. As a novice, Orestina was fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Salerno, in The Amalfi coast. Along with her strong faith in God, it was there that she found her love of children and cooking.
At 21, Orestina left the religious life and immigrated to Montreal, Canada where she lived with her siblings until she married Nicola in 1959. In 1962, they relocated to Calgary to take advantage of better job opportunities. Orestina worked for Scott Young (Western) Ltd for 20+ years in many capacities. Promoted to Forelady and Supervisor, she was highly respected by her employer and employees.
Family and owning her own home were paramount in Orestina’s life. Staunchly religious, she applied the skills she acquired as a nun through her generous love for family and friends, and by feeding all those who came into her home very well. She loved her pets, especially her dogs, Lady, Ringo, Chico, Duke, Fritz and Isabella Rosselini, as well as her numerous birds, above all, her budgie, Tomasina. Along with her pets, she adored flowers and plants as well as her yearly vegetable garden – something she enjoyed until she was stricken with dementia and strokes in 2003. Fighting the condition for over 6 years she was able to live at home, cared for mainly by her husband and Home Care nurses until shortly after her 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church (321 – 90th Avenue S.E.) on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. (Prayers and Visitation from 11:00 – 11:30 a.m.) Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
