John Griffin Umbrite of Calgary passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the age of 94 years.
John was born, raised and educated at Gleichen, later attending U of A, Agriculture Faculty. He joined the RCMP in 1940, serving until 1945, stationed in Nova Scotia. John spent fifty years in the life insurance industry and was Field Supervisor, County Kneehill from 1946 – 1948. He was the Charter President of the Three Hills Kinsmen in 1949, Past President of the Calgary Kennel Club, Past President of the Calgary Life Underwriters Association, Past Potentate of the Alazhar Shrine, and was a sixty year member of the Masonic Order, Past Director of the Calgary YMCA and was a member for fifty-four years, Honourary Life Member of the Alberta Road Builder and Heavy Construction Association and was a member of the Pinebrook Golf and Country Club since 1975.
John is survived by two sons, George (Sandra) of Vernon, BC and Barry of Vancouver, BC; grandson Michael (Cara) of Dawson Creek, BC; and his sister Elizabeth Castella of Delta, BC. He was predeceased by Annie, his wife of sixty-five years, on July 22, 2008 and his sister Ruth Bird of Bend, OR.
