John was born on Easter Sunday April 12, 1925 in Bielefeld, Germany the youngest of four children and grew up in southern Alberta. He was proud to be Canadian, proud of his education and accomplishments as an engineer in the oil patch, from the early 50’s to the early 80’s, but proudest of his family including his wife Betty (Elizabeth nee Payne, deceased 2012), Barbara (Tom Lett), Shirley (Jeff Sisson), Diane (Mike Black) and Beverly (Mark Pallister), grandchildren Alexander and Sebastian Finch, Taylor and Teagan Sisson, Katie and Andrew Black, and Rebecca and Lucas Pallister and great-grandchild Kaden Bedard.
John worked in many areas in the oil industry and was a pioneer the incorporation of environmental aspects in drilling, this fit in well with his love of nature. He loved to be very active whether in the mountains with family and friends hiking in the summer or skiing in the winter or playing badminton. He was a champion badminton player while attending the University of Alberta and loved to play badminton well into his 70’s at the Glencoe Club. John also enjoyed travelling and he and Betty saw much of the world, whether it was cruising, driving the motorhome down to the US or visiting the pyramids in Egypt they loved to see new things. The other thing John was known for was his DIY projects, the house was constantly under renovation with multiple additions and updates.
John will be truly missed and lovingly remembered by all his family. Dad – we have the highest respect for you and will continue to make you proud of us through the humbleness you taught us, the fairness in all situations and the high moral standards you instilled in us all. We miss you dearly. The family would like to thank the staff of the Colonel Belcher and caregiver Lorraine Swift for the compassionate care given to our father.
