September 26, 1939 – Midnapore, AB
July 4, 2014 – Calgary, AB
Eleanor Judith Turnquist of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2014 at the age of 74, after a long fight with the effects of cardio-pulmonary disease.
Eleanor was born on September 26, 1939 and grew up in Midnapore, Alberta, the eldest of four children, and proudly a member of the Shaw family that settled in the area in 1883. After completing her training at the Calgary General Hospital, she began a career in psychiatric nursing that she continued until the arrival of her first child, where after she became a dedicated and focused mother. When her children entered school, she worked in her father’s businesses, Shaw Construction and Shaw-nee Slopes Golf Course; and later the constituency office for the provincial riding of Calgary Shaw, named for her family. In the later part of her life, she enjoyed the time she spent at her property in Mexico, and the farm near Gwynne, Alberta. But Eleanor always saw herself as an artist, where she felt the greatest satisfaction– from hand-sewing her children’s Halloween costumes to the toll painting she passionately pursued until her eyesight no longer allowed it. She will be remembered by those who knew her for her kind heart, her high standards and her sharp sense of humour. She left us too soon.
Eleanor will be greatly missed by her two children and their families, Llewellyn (Jennifer) and Linnea; and her grandchildren, Keegan, Bronwyn, and Vanessa. She was predeceased by her husband of thirty-nine years, Gaylard, in 2005.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
