TURNBULL, Marjorie Isabella

October 21, 1937– Edinburgh, Scotland
November 20, 2013 – Calgary, AB

On Wednesday, November 20, 2013 Marjorie Turnbull (née Spence), sweetheart for over sixty years and beloved wife of John, was mercifully released after a long and debilitating illness.

Marjorie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. After graduating from Moray House Teachers Training College, Marjorie taught at Leith Links Primary School in Edinburgh until her marriage in 1961. John and Marjorie settled in Musselburgh where John was a family physician and Marjorie dedicated herself to raising their two children. In 1969, they immigrated to Alberta, Canada. Marjorie took great pride in her family and their Scottish heritage, putting on fantastic parties for the Canadian and expat community in Calgary, and caring for her much-loved dogs and cats.

Marjorie is survived and mourned by her husband John; her son Alan and his wife Robin and grandson Hamish; her daughter Fiona and her husband Allen, grandson Iain and granddaughter Sara; her sister Audrey and her husband Mirko; and nieces and nephews in Great Britain. Marjorie was predeceased by her brother Tom.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, November 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family appreciates the care provided by the staff on the Parkland Unit, Southwood Care Centre. If friends so desire, the family suggests donations be made in memory of Marjorie to the Calgary Humane Society, www.calgaryhumane.ca.

In living memory of Marjorie Turnbull, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

  9. Bruce Jespersen :

    John,
I was saddened to read of your loss. Seldom has a written tribute, as was to your Marjorie in the Herald, conveyed to me such seasoned yet tender love between two ‘sweethearts’. In time may the mercy of her release, as you so touchingly put it, become the mercy of her remembrance that gives you comfort.
    With sympathy,
    Bruce Jespersen

  10. Jacqueline Spence :

I’m Jacqueline Spence. Marjorie and I were cousins. I am so sorry that I found her when it was too late.

My father, Jimmy, was Marjorie’s father Tommy’s brother. Unfortunately our fathers weren’t friends.

I visit my parents’ grave roughly twice a year and I always make a short detour in the cemetery to visit Granny Spence’s grave. Granny Spence died in 1953 before I was born. But my older sister, Anne (named after our Granny), has strong memories of Granny Spence.

It would be nice to hear back from Audrey or indeed any member of the family.

    Condolences and love,
    Jacqueline
