I feel devastated by Elayne’s passing. She was a generous, honest, courageous woman who’s insight and wisdom I cherished and will miss every day. She taught me things about life and the need to stay positive despite and in spite of tragedy and chaos. To Elayne’s soul-mate Clay and father Greg: I know your grief is all encompassing. But, I pray that her memory, her love for you and her gentle spirit will be a comfort for you in the days and weeks to come. Sincerely, Cathy.

  6. This still doesn’t seem real to me… I’ve only had the pleasure of knowing Elayne and Clay for a year now, but it’s honestly felt like a life time. We all met in Florida down in the keys kiteboarding, after our first beers together I knew we would all be life long friends. Even with thousands of miles between us we still managed to keep in touch talk, laugh and plan out our future adventures together. Her energy, love, and amazing personality will always be remembered and her smile and laugh will always be with us. To Clay and all the family I haven’t met yet, stay positive, remember the good times, and the laughs. I’m sending love and positive vibes your way hope to see you soon.
    Sincerly, Nick Ziegler

  12. Elayne was a good friend of my daughter, Dayna (since junior high) and we have had ongoing contact over the years. This fall, I was diagnosed with ALS and Elayne (despite the progression of her own illness) came to see me and brought me some very thoughtful gifts.
I know that Elayne is in a better place and that she is at peace–my sincere condolences and sympathy go out to Clay, her parents, extended family and friends!

Dear Clay : I have never met you or your lovely wife Elayne, but I have been praying for you both for months now. Our son Brandon works with you and he told us of your story. He met your wife and told us she was an”awesome person”. This will be such a hard time for you, but just remember that like a ship on the horizon, when you loose sight of her, someone else is waving for her on the other side. I hope this brings you some peace at such a difficult time. Take Care and surround yourself with friends. xo (Cape Breton).

  15. My deepest condolences to Elayne and Clay’s family. Elayne’s zest for life was immediately felt as soon as you talk to her be. Although our time with her at work was very short, she will be greatly missed. As soon as she was diagnosed, her and I shared our experiences while going through treatment as I went through the same. Despite how aggressive her treatment was she always made light of her situation. The last message I got from her, she told me:

“Cancer highlights your mortality instantly and I think that it can be a real gift, makes life more precious. I am just looking forward to having that view once on the other side of this.”

I hope and pray that your view on the other side is way better than our Elayne. You will be greatly missed.

I met her years ago as a young lady whose talents shone through despite her shyness.
Mostly though I knew her through her Aunt Nora Whitcher whose unconditional love in speaking about Elayne lit up the atmosphere like the Aurora Borealis dances on Northern skies. Through Nora I was able to witness the magic of Elayne evolving into a beautiful and vibrant young woman. How fortunate for all of us to have shared this earth with Elayne. I was lucky enough to work with Elayne during her time with the youth office. Her focus on helping young people was apparent each day of her work life, and her fearlessness in finding ways to create a connection with young people we work with is borne out in those young persons who even after Elayne left our office, would ask about “the nice lady named Elayne” who was helping them before. Her considerate nature, her candy affections, and the pure effervescence she had for each day are what I will most about Elayne. I was so glad to catch up with her when she came to our office’s anniversary celebrations and was heartened to see her eyes light up and face glow with the excitement she had over plans for her future with her Clay. I’m comforted by the fact that when she left this mortal earth, it was within the company of those who loved her and who made sure she knew how much she was loved. I will miss her and I mourn her absence from this world. My condolences go out to her husband, her family, and all who were lucky enough to also know Elayne in some way.

Her courage, determination and positive spirit as she battled her illness, gave me hope to see me through difficult times. I hope she knew just how special she was. Judie showed me a picture of Elayne, taken not long before her diagnosis, with her beautiful long hair and gorgeous smile. She was absolutely stunning and I know just as lovely on the inside as well. Toutant & Bromby Families,
You may not know me or Brandon, but Elayne was a great friend of ours. Even though we were 1530 miles away from each other we still managed to stay in touch, daily. We met exactly 2 years ago on vacation in the Bahamas and instantly I knew we were going to be great friends. Together we plotted and planned all sorts of future vacations and festivals we could attend together. A few we actually lived out. I still plan to work on those we had not gotten to, with her close to my heart, as I know she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Elayne brought an unexplainable excitement into life, into any room she entered. We had a connection as if we had been life long friends even though our friendship was far too short. She not only touched my life, but she and Clay met so many of our friends here in California, who send their love and are incredibly saddened over this loss. Brandon and I will miss Elayne tremendously. Words cannot express how heartbroken we are. I know that she is in a better place and no longer in pain.
    Much Love,
    Candice & Brandon

  41. I worked with Elayne at the Youth Office.
For Elayne, life was so very precious and it was clear to me that she faced each day with a real zest for life. This “Lust for Life” (Iggy Pop) was truly refreshing and she made me reflect upon how lucky we are to have the privilege to do the things we do in our work and in our “play”.
It is unfathomable to be mourning her loss.
    She was taken too soon.
It is easy to say that it is not fair… But, I think if Elayne was still here among us mortals, she would discourage such sombre thoughts, and make everyone look at the bright side.
So…. I’m looking at the bright side, and what is so apparent to me is that she made the world a much better place for all those who had the privilege to know her.
My heartfelt condolences to her husband, Clay, and her family.

  47. A week ago today, I said goodbye to my sweet friend Elayne. A friend who taught me so much about living, despite knowing the end was so near. It saddens me to know there won’t be any more texts saying, “You awake? It’s going to be another AMAZING day!” Elayne faced each day with a goal and a plan. You were either with her or against her…..but not against her for long, as she had no time for that. Her plan was happening.
My friendship with Elayne will always be a special part of my life, and her lessons will be with me forever. Our bond grew through good times and bad, laughter and tears, defying the generation gap. Humor was our mutual friend. Along with an abundance of humor in life, there was even humor in her pending death. She giggled as she used excessive tape to put photos everywhere in her hospital room, knowing she didn’t have to take them down. She had the last laugh with her cell phone provider as she signed a “fantastic” 3 year contract for her recently purchased iPhone 5. Always thinking. Always looking for a bright side. I marveled at her ability to navigate through her medical journey with such integrity and determination to keep everyone on their toes. Her caregivers knew she was the boss and on a “need to know” basis at all times. Even from her hospital bed she had everything and everyone organized. As Elayne would say, “BOOM!”
To Clay, my friend: I thank you for allowing me to part of so many special times with you and Elayne. You and your bride were perfect for each other. She loved you so much. You were her “hero”, “rock”, “baby”. You made her feel so loved, and she was so happy to be your wife. You kept all your promises. You were her lifeline. You were strong for her when she couldn’t be strong, and her voice as she weakened. You were her safe place to fall when she lost her will. She knew she was in a good place.
To Greg and Joan: You had such a beautiful daughter; beautiful in every way. I hope all your memories will keep you strong in the days to come. Yes Greg, she was such a “good girl”.
To the rest of the Bromby and Toutant families, I offer my condolences; take care of each other.
    “Love you forever Elayne…sweet dreams”

  48. I did not know Elayne as well as I wish I could have; yet the few times we met were enough to impact me: she made me think, made me laugh, made me act on the living of life rather than the passive spending of time.

She certainly made the most of the brief times we had; may I keep her lessons close to my heart and in my everyday practices. I now understand what Clay meant when he described the gifts of his lady love; her spark, an infectious draw that she had over people…to draw them in and draw them together.

Clay, Greg, Joan, family, and friends…we offer our condolences and our hope that we can honor her spirit and her wishes by loving and living and getting on with all of the good stuff…and finding good stuff despite that which we don’t understand, can’t change…

    With love,

My dearest Elayne, words cannot describe the impact you had on my life. To a beautiful friend And mentor. I can still remember the first time we met in the library at AE Cross. All my friends were jealous that I had this fun, young, and beautiful mentor. While my others friends had older mentors. The first time we hung out we coloured dragon pictures. I think yours was purple and pink!! Girl power !!! It didn’t matter what we did, we always had fun. I loved it when we would go for sushi cause I had no idea what you were ordering but you knew all the good stuff. Like you were Japanese in disguise. Talking to you was like talking to a big sister. I never had a sister but always wanted one. Our conversations were always easy. No stress and nothing I couldn’t say. Elayne was there for me in my darkest and lightest days. I remember how proud you were of me when I graduated. I will never forget that moment in the bar. This entire journey I’ve been on has been a rollarcoster. As always you were there to comfort or congratulate me. I know working with kids like me was your career. But we had something different. You were more than that to me and I too you. I can only strive to be as caring and selfless as you. You are a true role model Elayne. I will never forget the wonderful lessons you have taught me. Will never forget your beautiful smile. And certinantly won’t forget your big giant heart!!! And don’t worry, as sad as I am I’m living my life to the fullest. Stopping to smell the roses on the way. I know that’s what you would want. I love you Elayne!!!

    Your loving friend and protege,
    Stevie – Lynn xoxoxooo

P.s. I’ll be sure to eat lots of Pho’ for you <333

I have spent many hours writing back and forth with your mom; that is gift and I have had some moments to sit with Clay and just talk about you. I miss you Elayne! I miss you so much. I think of you each day; I have a candle that burns in my home everyday. I miss my friend. Love you Elayne! x0x0x0x0x0

Happy Birthday Elayne! It’s been a hard day because I have never missed you more. It was cold and raining all day; I think it was your way in saying: ” Don’t cry friend. It’s my freakin birthday! Smile and enjoy rain. Just like you told us to kick the snow when you get the chance!” Rain is peaceful. You brought us peace today on your special day. Your smile was so infectious Elayne. Your laugh was addicting. I just loved how you always had a way of turning things around and making a pessimist to an optimist! I lit a candle again for you. I stopped by a trendy coffee place and had a funky drink in your honor today. I miss you Elayne. Happy Birthday Buddy!
    Your friend always Nancy

  58. Well me again my dear FRIEND!
I went to the Tree Planting ceremony honoring all those who are now in their Heaven last weekend. You are part of this Elayne! They planted a tree in your honor. That is so cool! That’s what you would say buddy. It’s at Fish Creek Park. So beautiful there. Peaceful. Just for you my friend and guess what? It was a beautiful; blue sky sunny day. Perfect. I know you were there. I saw your puppy; well your big dog now. I saw Clay and your dad. It was a sweet day. I walked the park and just thought of our special times together. Just know I am missing your like crazy! Sweet dreams buddy x0x0x0x0
