TOUSIGNANT, Eileen May (née Heffernan)

October 10, 1918 – December 9, 2012
“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”

Eileen passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by the love of her family, on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Carewest George Boyack, Calgary, at the age of 94 years.

She was born and grew up on the family farm near Grainger, Alberta. With no doctor present, only her father attended her mother with the delivery of their first-born – the two alone and courageous in their farmhouse on the wild prairie. A hard-working, thoughtful and generous person, Eileen worked at Brock’s Dry Goods during the Second World War while her future husband Alphonse served in the Canadian Forces overseas. They married shortly after the War and were soon raising a family. As a young mother, Eileen was active in the Catholic Women’s League and in her senior years, volunteered preparing food at the Calgary Drop-in Centre. Eileen dearly loved nature – the splendour of the mountains and the beauty of the prairie. Through amazing resourcefulness, she and Alph realized their dream of building a beautiful family cabin at Fintry on Okanagan Lake. Eileen loved her family and was always delighted when there was a new baby “on the way.”

She was the loving mother of six children, grandmother of seventeen and great-grandmother of twelve: daughter Sharyn and Jim (Jennifer and Brad (Clare, Conor), Melanie and Wayne (Matthew, Joshua, Nathaniel), Michael and Jodie (Kaela, Jessica, Ethan)); son Victor and Kathleen (Marni and Cam (Zoë, Caden), Kyle and Marijana (Maya and Sabrina), Dane and Teresa)); son Duane and Paulette (Carrie, Andrew); son Dale and Melanie (Cody, Carson, Brenna); daughter Sheila (Joel, Stephen); daughter Rhonda and Padraig (Nicole, Renée, Liam, Cian). She was predeceased by her husband Alphonse; father Joseph; mother Eva (née Charlebois); brothers, Bernard, Martin, Gerald and Joseph, and granddaughter, Danielle Eileen.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (1525 – 45th Street S.E.) on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca. Heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Carewest George Boyack for their professional and very loving care of Eileen throughout her twelve years there.

In living memory of Eileen Tousignant, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  1. Phil Little and Anne Marie McDonell :

Eileen is dearly remembered for her kindness towards us over the years. We express our cousinly affection to all her family – may you be consoled by the love she gave you and instructed you to share among one another. She lived to see so many great-grandchildren, a true blessing. We regret that we cannot join you on the day of her funeral – we will be thinking of all of you. Share those beautiful stories of growing up in Calgary or those summers at Fintry, and you will feel her presence that is within you. Our love to you.

To all of Auntie’s wonderful, large family, I will miss Auntie Eileen and look fondly back through many decades of association with your large family. She always treated me as one of her own whenever I shared time at the family home and was always a positive force to those around her. I have volumes of great memories of times spent with her and Uncle Alf, too, of course and all their great kids!
