TOROK, June Rose (nee Helpard)

June 25, 1929 – Somerset, NS
September 27, 2013 – Calgary, AB

After a courageous second battle with cancer, our beloved June succumbed to her illness to answer the call home by our Father and to take His hand in final peace and tranquility.

June would want us all to celebrate her life, so the following is a “condensed” celebration and summary of the life of this great lady, whose spirit will remain with us forever as she is remembered, loved and missed by all whose lives she touched along her journey in the physical world. In 2006, June visited Nova Scotia to compile the Helpard genealogy about which she wrote a book. In addition, June authored two more books one of which was her life story. In 2007, June was the proud recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alberta Women of Country Music (AWOCM). From the front steps of her childhood home in Annapolis Valley, NS, where Hank Snow and her brother George taught her three chords on the guitar and through her many travels as a member of the “Kountry Kuzzins” band, June shared the stage with several of the greatest country artists including Wilf Carter, Merle Haggard, Don Williams among others. Singing, writing songs and playing her guitar was what June was all about as well as being with family and friends or enjoying a quiet evening at home with her soul mate and, in her words, “darlin” husband of 46 years, Lou.

June is survived by “the love of her life” husband, Lou Torok of Calgary, several family members and many friends from Nova Scotia, Alberta, British Columbia and California.

She was predeceased by all eight of her older siblings.

A Private Service for family and friends will be held at Cedars Villa Long Term Care Centre Auditorium 3330 8 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of June Torok, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  6. Niece Sandra Caines :

My loving aunt, may your sleep be a short one until we all get together again in a new world promised us in the scriptures, where there will be new heavens and a new earth, enjoying one another’s company again, music all around, laughter and joyful times — good friends and great family. Revelation 21:3,4 says there will be no more death nor pain nor sorrow at that time – something we all yearn for. My love to Uncle Lou and the rest of the family ( and his) and Susan, who Lou and June looked on as part of the family as well, all who worked so hard on making our aunt’s last days one of comfort. We will all miss “mom”, Aunt, beloved wife of Uncle Lou. Hugs to you all.

Uncle Lou, our sincere sympathies on the passing of Aunt June. As a little girl, I recall this beautiful woman with a big smile and big hair, so talented, telling stories in Nanny’s (Florence’s) kitchen along with Grandmother Helpard when you visited us in Halifax. Unfortunately, I didn’t see you in 2006 when Aunt June worked on the Family Tree. On behalf of my dad and sisters, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
