TORLEY, John

April 2, 1929 – Liverpool, England
December 4, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta

This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.

Our Dad has left a legacy of love and blessed us all with his joy for life. His smile and tenderness touched everyone who ever met him. Along with our beloved Mum Lil (deceased 2004), they raised us with faith, compassion and a true sense of family. This legacy will live on in all our children and grandchildren.

John will be greatly missed by his family, Sylvia (Bill deceased) Benson, Marg and Paul Viergutz and Chris and Rob McCormack; grandchildren, Jan and Brett Darichuk, Scott and Michelle McCormack, James and Kelly Viergutz, Brad McCormack and partner Cher MacNeill; and Angela and Mirek Kuklicz; Papa John adored his great grandchildren and he will have a special place in the hearts of Payton Darichuk, Shealyn McCormack, Rayna McCormack and soon to be Alister Viergutz. John will also be missed by his brother Vinny as well as many loving nieces and nephews both in Canada and England.

At Peace with Jesus.

At John’s request, a private family service was held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Entheos Retreat Centre, 242032 Range Road 40, Calgary, AB T3Z 2W8.

In living memory of John Torley, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Condolence Messages

  1. Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. I was thinking of you and your family after watching a movie that played recently at the Globe called Good Old Freda. It was about the woman who was a secretary for the Beatles. There were a lot of old pictures of Liverpool in the movie. Say hi to Rob for me. Take care.
    Bob

  3. Margaret Blank :

To all of Rev. Torley’s family I extend my heartfelt condolences. John was the joyful, healing presence at St. James, Calgary, when I returned to the Church after a lengthy time of struggle and separation. He rejoiced in my reconciliation, and his support and prayers were the foundation for my bringing my children and eventually my husband into faith. His life was a blessing to all who knew him. May you be comforted by your memories as well as the faith he passed on to you all. Deep peace of God be with you.

  4. Peace be with you all. I will always remember John Torley’s warmth, smile and the love of God that shined through him. I attended St. James Anglican Church when John was a minister there, and I will never forget the way he blessed and smiled at my very fidgety young boys while at the communion rail. As a young, and underconfident mother, this made me feel accepted and loved. He made a difference in my life and the Lord is surely rejoicing in having John join Him and the angels in heaven!

  5. May God’s peace be with you all. John and Lil were such a special couple and showed their love to all they met. I met them first when I lived in Airdrie and will never forget the last service there before they moved to Hanna. We were singing or should I say trying to sing the last song but we were all crying but not John, because he knew his Lord was with him and all of us. John has made such a difference in my and many people’s lives. God Bless.

  7. Sylvia, Marg and Chris,
My condolences to each of you and your families at this difficult time. I was saddened to read about your Dad’s passing and it brought back a flood of memories of the great times your dad and family provided for those of us who were members of the Crescent Park Rangers football club. A great ending to our high school years and a wonderful start to the rest of our life. Your dad was a wonderful man.

  9. Janice and Mike Bauer and girls :

We were so sad to hear of John’s passing. He was a gentle, gracious, peaceful, faithful man of God. Mike and I were so blessed to have John perform our marriage ceremony 23 years ago. I am sure that there are some wonderful reunions happening in heaven…in particular, I hope, with my dad. My prayer is that memories of happy times and knowing that John is in Jesus’ presence will bring his family some peace and assurance.
    Blessings and Hugs!

So sorry to hear of your dads passing. Rev Torley is one of only a few people I have ever encountered that had a true sparkle in their eyes! His love for all, unshakeable faith and passion for life truly shone from deep within. At last, he is with his Creator & Saviour in the special place Jesus prepared for him and reunited with his love. – Cobi (Legary) Grisack

    Dear Sylvia, Chris and family
We were so sorry to hear about your Dad. We knew John and Lil though my parents , Joan and Sam Hannah. The Torley’s and Hannah’s were great friends in the mobile home park in Dalhousie. They had great times together and John and Lil were always so gracious and kind. John was a great inspiration to many at the St. James church and to all who knew him. He will be sadly missed. We hope your sweet memories of him will help you through your grieving.

  13. Alan and Barb Jones :

To Sylvia, Marg and Paul, Chris and Rob and your families, We were really sad to hear of John’s passing. We haven’t seen him for a while but we always had him and you in our hearts. I can still remember meeting John and your mum when I first came to Canada as a lad of 19. I was welcomed into your home and I think if I hadn’t have had that emotional support and love from everyone I probably would have gone back to Liverpool. You were my Canadian family. I can still see John sitting at the kitchen table while eating his supper and saying he was going on a diet but wasn’t having any potatoes but had 4 pieces of buttered bread instead. We had some great laughs and I will miss him greatly. The only bad thing I can say about him was that he was an Evertonian! Love to you all in this time of great sadness.

    Dear Sylvia and Family;
We first got to know John as Dad and Papa through Sylvia, Bill and Angie. We remember him as always being cheerful and friendly and we enjoyed visiting with him and the family.
Then we lost our son, and John became much more to us. He offered us support, caring and comfort during a very difficult time for which we are truly grateful. John will always have an extra special place in our hearts for all that he did.

    Love Don, Linda and Aaron
