TOEWS, Hugo H

December 27, 1923 – January 25, 2013

On Friday January 25, 2013 at the age of 89 years Hugo passed away peacefully in the Santuari Hospice at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary.

Hugo was born on a farm outside Linden, Alberta to Cornelius and Anna Toews and spent his childhood on the farm along with his brother Alva and sisters Marion, Frieda, Kay and Amanda.

He was married to Corrine “Ruth” Toews for sixty-four years before she passed away on December 6, 2011, and they had four boys together.

While he struggled with the many frailties that old age brings, he was always gentle and patient with all those around him. He joined the Canadian Army as a young man of eighteen years and fought in Europe, including landing on Juno Beach in Normandy on D-Day. He was wounded in action just a few weeks short of the Allied victory in Europe. Upon his discharge from the army he returned to Alberta, and married Ruth, his true love. He maintained a career in the automotive industry, culminating in his partnership in Renfrew Chrysler prior to his retirement at the age of sixty three.

Hugo is survived by two sons; Allan and Gord (Coral); Four grandchildren Tyler and Maya from Robert and Hazel, Brett and Tyler from Gord and Coral; one great grandson, Ayden from Maya and Jerry. Besides his wife Corrine, Hugo was predeceased by his sons Jerry and Robert.

Dear Alan and Gord and family.
My sincere condolences to you all. My mother-Pauline and Edith were sisters. My sister Dorothy was a bridesmade at Ruth and Hugo’s wedding.
I always thought Hugo was such a gentle soul. I spoke to him at Ruth’s funeral, and knew he was struggling with his health at that time.
Thinking of you all at this time.
