THYGESEN, Duane Darryl

October 19, 1953 – Tofield, AB
October 10, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Duane Thygesen , beloved husband of Carin Thygesen of Calgary, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 60 years of age, after a discovery of cancer.

He was a man who enjoyed time around the BBQ and the kitchen table, listening to the stories and journeys of those he loved, and discussing the issues of the day with vigour and insight. He loved his “girls” and invested much time in their pursuits in academics and sports. His daughter Lisa attributes her critical thinking and writing skills to his guidance. One of his greatest joys was teaching his daughters Jenna and Andrea to waterski.

Drawn to complexity, he had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and inquiry in both his work as a project manager in the Oil and Gas industry, as well as subjects ranging from physics, math and astronomy to politics, history and finance. In the past month he thoroughly enjoyed the biography of the great physicist Robert Oppenheimer. He reveled in giving his daughter’s an eclectic education in music, he especially loved the blues in his later years spending good times at The Blues Can in Inglewood.

Duane is survived by his three daughters Lisa Strahl (husband Mark, grandson Maclean), Jenna Thygesen, and Andrea Thygesen; his mother Lauretta Thygesen; siblings, Aaron Thygesen (wife Cheryl), Ione Olesen (husband John), Lorhyl Davis (husband Jerry), and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews whom he loved so much. He was predeceased by his father Larry Thygesen and sister Arlene Calon.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 17th South Calgary Funeral Centre, (12700 Macleod Trail South, Calgary, AB T2J 7E5) at 1:00 p.m. reception to follow. For more information call (403) 540-8637.

In living memory of Duane Thygesen, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  1. Dearest Family
I love you all so very much. I hope you will always remember that. If you ever need me, or want to visit us, you have a permanent home and place to come to. A huge loss to us all, especially to you, his closest most prized people in the whole world.
Here are some of the experiences, thoughts and memories with Duane. There are many more, I just thought of these few.
I really want to be there for his memorial, and I want to hear all the wonderful people, praises, love that is I know going to be expressed for Duane. I wont be able to make it back up again.
I always knew how special he was. When I was a crazy teenager, there was no doubt I had a place to stay at his house when I wanted to.
I remember as a child, he was always dragging me and Arlene around in his red radio flyer wagon. Dressing up puppies and kittens. He was always mindful and caring.
My children, though grown young adults and adults have always had a very special place for Uncle Duane in their hearts. He was and is their “bad ass” Uncle. He has been monumental in helping Cristalle and in being a great example of strength and survival.
When I was older and had children, he was always very compassionate towards them. He was an advocate of making sure mental health was a priority in understanding , supporting without judgement.
His intellect was far beyond what I could comprehend. His ability to understand a situation, whether in life, or in business was clarity, inventive genius.
The way he took care of and cared for our families dear Mom, is nothing outside of amazing. Every time I saw him I thanked him for doing so. Her every need was met with comfort and care.
My older brother Aaron and Duane were always very close. Like Aaron said to him, the last time I saw Duane was ” you are my only brother and I love you”. Aaron and Ione have both been along with Duane, very caring sons and daughter to Mom. I am greatful to have such wonderful older siblings.
Duane will be missed more than words can express, by so many in so many different ways.
Carin, Lisa, Jenna, Andrea. What a great tribute to his life. You are all strong and special women, just as he wants you to be.
I know he is with us, in our hearts and minds.
I love you Duane, thank you for being my brother.
    We will be together again
I want to keep in touch with you all, my love and deepest condolences.
    Loryhl, Aunt Loryhl

I was so sad to learn of Duane’s illness and sudden passing. I wish you never had to endure this pain. Please accept my sincere condolences and know that I am sending big hugs to comfort you.

Duane always greeted me with a warm smile and genuine interest. We had good conversations that were never long enough. I was always amazed that he could talk intensely, knowledgeably, and with great emotion, about anything. We usually had a pretty good laugh, too.

Above all, he loved his family. I hope that love sees you through your grief and brings you comfort and happy memories.

I am so saddened by the loss of Duane, son/brother to Laurette, Ione, Aaron and Loryhl and families.
So sad and so sudden. I may only have known Duane as a Child, as Ione and I would spend many years of summers together which included her siblings. Ione always kept me informed as to what everyone was up to.
My thoughts are with the family in this time of grieving.
    Love from,

    Dear Thygesen Family,
I have only known Duane for a short time but always enjoyed his company while we worked on a drilling rig project together. I always found him to be a kind, courteous man who was very proud of his family and his work. He spoke often of his daughters and how he enjoyed the time they spent together. His knowledge and obvious desire to continue learning and be the best he could be was what I liked most about him. I considered him a friend and am deeply saddened by his passing. My condolences go out to your entire family.

  10. Dear Thygesen Family,
All of us at Cubex Limited want to extend our sincere sympathy and condolences to Carin, Lisa, Jenna, Andrea, and the entire Thygesen Family for the loss of Duane. He has been an important part of the Cubex Family for 30 years and we all feel a sense of loss with Duane’s passing. Duane started as a customer of Cubex in the early 1980’s when he owned a Schramm T685H Drill Rig. He soon became an employee and worked with us developing our Air Hammer business in oil field applications in Western Canada. Our success in Canada developed into an extended drilling contract in Yemen and then onto various contracts in China starting in 2001. With his passion for the drilling industry and extensive knowledge of anything “technical,” Duane was always a source of innovative ideas in developing new products. We are all saddened that our friend and colleague is gone but we will always remember and cherish his dedication and commitment to “getting the job done.” Bill Wilson/Cubex Limited

Dear Loretta, Ione and family members:
I am so sorry for your loss of a loving and caring brother and son. I remember the delicious dinner he made for us when I was visiting you Ione and Loretta a few years ago. Duane was so full of life and enjoyed so much getting together with longtime family members at Brody and Amanda’s wedding in February 2012.
Life is so tangible and short. I am so sad for you all as it is hard when things happen so unexpectedly. Memories are precious.
Please accept my sincere condolences and heart felt feeling for you and Mom and family members.

    Dear Carin and the Girls,
We are so saddened by the news of Duane’s passing. Our hearts go out to you during this very sad time. I’ll always remember Duane’s unfathomable joy of water skiing, even when his fellow “participants” weren’t all that keen at 7 am on a Saturday morning. Keep the memories of what he meant to your life close and it will give you warmth and courage as you face a new set of buoys to navigate on a cool, clear, calm morning.

  16. Dear Thygesen Family,
I am shocked and so saddened by the news of Duane’s passing. We’ve worked on a project for a period of time. As a client, he was so conscientious and responsible, and so friendly and helpful. In the spare time, we always had pleasant conversation. Although the work was intense, he always kept positive. I could feel his optimism about life from his smile.
Hope his smile will be with us forever.

  17. Bruce, Ruth and Rachel Parent :

We spent many happy hours with Duane and Carin at various hockey rinks in Calgary. We enjoyed watching Andrea and Rachel play together since their early days in Atom. Duane took such pride in watching Andrea play and cheering on her team, and spoke so highly of his other kids and the activities they were involved in. We were so very sorry to learn of Duane’s passing. He was a cheerful and outgoing person who was easy to talk to, always interesting, and always engaging. Our thoughts and prayers will be with the entire family.

  19. Dear Carin, Lisa, Jenna, Andrea,

I’ve known Duane for a long time coming, but in the last few years is when I felt that I got to truly get close to him. I’ve always considered Duane one of my best friends in Calgary. Duane’s desire to better himself and be the best has always be obvious to me, as shown by his pride in his nickname “Brain” given to him by his friends during his many project trips to China. He is such an open-minded man who always considered others opinions, and I am truly distraught at having lost such an amazing individual who could always truly bring the best out of anyone he talked to. His knowledge and embracement of the Chinese culture has surprised and impressed me many times.

We were invited to his vacation home last summer, where my son, Linus, and I were taught by Duane to water ski. Duane was such a good coach that he had me skiing on the water for 10 minutes straight on my very first attempt. Even though this may seem extremely simple, it made a big difference. It was such a wonderful and relaxing stay.

Duane’s knowledgeability and intelligence when it came to having a conversation was truly astounding. I wondered how someone like him who dedicated so much time to working hard at his job could know so many things from reading so many books.

Our family is truly grateful for the time in which we knew Duane, and are extremely saddened by Duane’s sudden passing. Duane will be missed and remembered.

Carin, if there is anything we can help with, please do not hesitate to inform us as we are willing to help you with anything.

Our deepest condolences to your entire family.

    George, Jennifer, Linus and Alice

  22. Schramm, Inc. :

    Dear Thygesen Family,
Our sincere condolences and sympathies on the passing of Duane. We first came to know Duane in 1986, and over these many years we worked closely with him and the Cubex team on various business opportunities. He always projected a positive “can do” attitude and we came to respect him for his deep knowledge of the drilling industry and his ability to take on and accomplish complex technical tasks. Duane always looked to push the cutting edge with new product development, something that he seemed to enjoy, perhaps because this type of work challenged his keen intellect. We will miss our business colleague, but mostly we will miss Duane because he was our friend. – Frank Gabriel, for Schramm, Inc.

  25. Condolences to all of your family from the O’Reilly family.
I was very saddened to hear of such an interesting man’s passing.

You see the first time I met Duane I was just a boy… he was this larger than life, infinitely tall wiry guy who seemed to have an energy and excitement for almost any subject.
To hear him and my father talking shop or nearly any subject under the sun….. and yet he always took the time to talk to me and with a respect and ability to drill down onto subjects that I found interesting at the time.
He spoke to me as if I were an adult, while fully realizing that I was just a kid and taking the time to explain things in totality.
I remember him taking a few minutes with me to play catch and even show me the mechanics of a curve ball.
He would always take a a moment or 2 on the phone asking me how I was doing if I answered the phone my parents place.
Saw how fond he was of his girls and know he must have been a great Dad.
It was great to sit down with him a couple of times as an adult and have some truly stimulating conversations.
I will always remember some of those as he often inspired me to think differently on various subjects and not limits yourself in your interests.
And while I have not seen him in recent years Duane was certainly someone who shaped aspects of who I am.
    He will be missed.

  28. Dear Thygesen Family,
I want to express my deepest sympathy to all the Thygesen family. I have worked with Duane over the last 8 or so years on several projects and I was always impressed by his enthusiasm and knowledge he brought to everything he did. He spoke often of his family, his new lake property and his love of everything to do with waterskiing. He could speak easily on any topic and you could tell he devoted his life to learning. He would often enthusiastically go into great detail on hydraulic schematics with me and I would have to stop him as I could not keep up. He always had the patience to slow down and repeat for me. I learned a great deal from working with Duane and he will be missed.
