Helen McConkey Thomson passed away in the pre dawn of Tuesday April 10, 2012. Helen is survived by her brother Gordon McConkey and son James John.
Helen was born in the Holy Cross Hospital, a native Calgarian. She attended Calgary Public Schools and St. Hilda’s School for Girls. Helen graduated from the University of Toronto class of 1947. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty-two years, James M. Thomson Q.C. in 2009. Helen’s love of history, the arts, and geography led her to travel the world extensively throughout her lifetime. She also enjoyed tremendously her annual trail rides in the Rockies with her girlfriends. Helen was active in her community. She volunteered and served on several boards including the CPO, the Junior League, Calgary Women’s Literary Club, and Meals On Wheels. Helen was a lifelong patron of the Arts in Calgary and was blessed to be physically active until late in life. Helen was grateful and proud to be born to pioneering parents James and Laura McConkey (nee Elves) of Cayley who chose Calgary to be their home.
James John and Gordon McConkey would like to sincerely thank many good friends who continued to include Helen in their activities as she declined these past two years. Many health care professionals and care givers are to be thanked for maintaining Helen in her precious home. A very special thanks to neighbours Mike and Sue Heimbecker and cousin Gordon Lindstedt.
