THOMSON, Gerald (Jerry) David

November 2, 1932 – November 18, 2013

It is with great sadness the family of Gerald (Jerry) Thomson announces his passing on Monday, November 18, 2013.

He is survived and deeply missed by his beloved wife Eleanor (nee Backstrom) of 58 years, his children Mark (Lynn Fighter), Melva, and Mavis; grandchildren Kyle (Lisette McCracken) and Kate, Valerie, and Taylor; great-grandchildren Fynnegan and Lily, and by their dog, Coalby. Born and raised in Edmonton, AB, he married his high-school sweetheart, Eleanor, in 1955.

After earning his Mechanical Engineering degree from University of Alberta in 1961, he embarked on a tremendous career that took him to such places as Trinidad, West Indies, Niagara Falls, Ontario and Fox Creek, Alberta, until retiring in 2002 from Summit Tubulars in Calgary, Alberta. Jerry will be remembered as an incredibly intelligent, kind, and generous man. His passions in life included his love of family, friends, dogs, cars and the great outdoors. Jerry shared his leadership ability in various roles as Deputy Mayor of Fox Creek (1971 to 1976), President of the Calgary Glenmore PC Association, President of PSAC (1992) and President of the Calgary Professional Club. Remaining athletic throughout his life, downhill skiing became his sport of choice; he was looking forward to the fourth annual Three Amigos ski trip.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers Jerry would appreciate a donation to the University Of Alberta Faculty Of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. George Ford Endowment Fund.

In living memory of Gerald Thomson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Eleanor and family we are so deeply saddened by Jerry’s passing. Both he and Eleanor have been a wonderful part of our famiy’s life for the past 13 years. The neighbourhood won’t be the same without “our Jerry” as the girls called him. He will be greatly missed. We are so sorry we won’t be at the service but you are in our thoughts.

  9. Eleanor, you are in my thoughts & prayers. Jerry was an inspiration with his open, welcoming smile and friendly handshake and his zest for life. I considered him my ‘engineering father’ as he graduated on my birth year from the same discipline as I – MecE – U of A. I remember visiting with you two at the Engineering Dean’s reception earlier this year and we had talked about going skiing this winter season. It was a surprise to hear of his passing. May your memories and love from your family & friends hold you gently during difficult time. You are a special lady. With deepest condolences,
    Kimi
