THOMPSON, Elizabeth

September 25, 1929 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
February 21, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

Elizabeth (Liz) Thompson nee Daviss passed away peacefully on February 21, 2015.

Liz was born in Winnipeg Manitoba on September 25, 1929. She completed her grade 12 at Gordon Bell High School, excelling in the high jump and hurdles. Liz spent many weekends and holidays at Grand Beach with the beach gang and the love of her life, Lee. Liz worked for 3 years at Great West Life making a new circle of close friends. After her marriage she became a full time career Mom. Being a wife and Mom was Liz’s calling. There was nothing more important to her than her family, adopting Carol Dutchak, daughter number three, and her two boys Mark and Robbie, 40 years ago. Liz was jubilant when grandbabies came along and logged in hundreds of hours as babysitter extraordinaire. For many years she canvassed for The Flowers of Hope, the Cancer Society and volunteered at her daughter’s schools. Liz was a staunch supporter of Lee in all his endeavours, ranging from President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the present day 41st Calgary Service Battalion, hosting N.A.T.O., and numerous military dignitaries, meeting visiting Royalty and attending events in the oil industry and the Calgary Stampede. Liz had five passions for fun, curling for over 30 years and curling from her arm chair for another 35. Summer meant gardening and any season found her travelling the world with Lee, often accompanied by special friends. Life was so grand, lunching and shopping with her gal pals. Liz led a full throttle life, did it her way, with a fierce loyalty to family and people whom she called friend. There are no words to convey how much she was loved and how much she will be missed.

Liz is survived by her loving husband Lee, together for 71 years; Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother to Nancy (Terry) Garberg, Marnie (Glenn) Molnar, Grandchildren, Wayne (Diane), Teryn, Brett (Devon), Courtland (Sandra), Quinton (Tiffany) and Great Granddaughter Audrina. Liz is predeceased by her parents Kenneth and Ethylwynne Daviss and her six brothers and sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church (3704 – 37th Street S.W.) on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Colonel Belcher Veterans Hospital.

In living memory of Elizabeth Thompson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

    Nancy, Marnie and Lee
Both of us are so saddened by the news of the passing of this beautiful, gracious lady. Your mum (Nancy and Marnie) and your loving wife and friend (Lee) turned many acquaintances into friends, and indeed close friends, because she cared and reached out. She leaves countless friends, like both of us, with a big hole in our lives and in our hearts. In your time of sorrow and mourning, both of us pray that the many happy life-long memories of Liz will buoy you. Liz will be missed. God Bless you and your families.

  6. Barry and Carol Ashton :

    Dear Lee and Family,
That obituary is a wonderful tribute to a gracious and fun-loving woman. We are saddened to learn of your loss, but share in the relief that her suffering has ended. We will remember the many outings to military, Stampede and other affairs, the most recent two years ago here in the Coachella Valley, where we were able to share a wonderful lunch, followed by a visit to Marnie’s lovely southern home. Liz will live on in our hearts forever. We have made a donation in Liz’s memory to the Friends of the Colonel Belcher Society (FOCBS.ca).
Warmest best regards and heartfelt condolences at your great loss,
    Carol and Barry

  10. Lee & Family:
Stella and I offer you our condolences. Liz was an amazing woman. She had a mind of her own and enjoyed life to the fullest. Whenever we saw her she was always so cheerful despite what others might consider adversity. She also had a wonderful dry sense of humor and had a look that was piercing is she did not approve. Thinking of the Colonel at this very sad time. We are out of the country and will miss the service. Wishing you strength at this difficult time.

  20. Bruce McDonald :

    Dear, Lee, Marnie and family;
I was very sadden to read of Liz’s passing last week. Unfortunately owing to a prior commitment here at the court, I was unable to attend the funeral service as I would have very much liked to.
One of the eternal memories of my entire law practise was when I was privileged to have travelled for my very first time to New York City with Lee and Liz as my travel companions. In many ways it was three innocents in the Big City. It was a truly marvelous experience and Liz played a very big role in making it as great as it was.
I ALWAYS enjoyed meeting up again with Liz either at Prudential Steel social functions ( in the good old days when it was fun to watch the Oilers come to town), Stampede functions and latterly events at the Military Museums. Liz was always so much fun to be with.
May the wonderful memories of your wife, mother and grandmother sustain you all in the years to come.
    Bruce
