THISTLE, Lora (nee Robertson)

March 31, 1961 – August 14, 2012

Lora-Lynn “Lora” Thistle (nee Robertson), beloved wife of Owen Thistle of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at the age of 51 years.

Lora was an amazing mother, wife and hero to many, including all the doctors and nurses who saw her over the course of her thirteen year cancer journey.

She leaves behind a legacy of helping other cancer patients to find their way from initial diagnosis through treatment. She had countless phone conversations with women across the country who learned from Lora how to see through the tears to a path forward. While in remission she joined two doctors in founding the “Breast Cancer Supportive Care” practice in Calgary; and helped build it to a fully funded, operational, and highly valued addition to the cancer care system in Calgary.

Meanwhile, and most importantly, Lora was dedicated to being a parent. She maintained a “normal” home life during the course of her treatments, and saw our girls grow into strong young women.

Besides her loving husband Owen, Lora is survived by her daughters, Kymber, Shayla and Cailyn; parents Joy and Grahame Robertson; and brothers, Doug, Dale (Lisa) and Chip. Also surviving Lora are her in-laws Kathryn and Graham Thistle.

A Celebration of Lora’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Lora’s name may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Lora Thistle, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.

  13. Owen please know I am thinking of you and the girls and sending my deepest of sympathy to your family. I have the fondest memories of Lora in the times we shared at our quilting retreats and get aways to Vancouver Island. Lora was someone who brought out the best in everyone – she was passionate in everything she tackled whether it was cooking, quilting, volunteer work and most of all her family. She will be missed dearly.

  14. Duncan and Lynne McCrindell :

Owen, we are so so sad to hear about Lora. She was way too young and vibrant to lose so young. We’re so sorry.

We remember her in a happy place aboard your sailboat in the Gulf Islands. Hopefully, you and the girls were able to share some happy memories of Lora today at the memorial service.

We are thinking of you and sharing in your grief.

    With love,

    Lynne and Duncan

  15. Sherry Thistle :

I lost my brother-in-law from Calgary this week to a rare form of kidney cancer. He was diagnosed six months ago. We are deeply saddened at his passing but relieved that he is at peace. I did not know Lora, but she sounds like she was a wonderful, loving and caring person. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like her – very inspirational . Cancer is a terrible disease. I would like to thank her for making the lives of many cancer patients and their families more bearable through her courageous and unselfish efforts. My sincere and deepest sympathy to the family. I wish I had the privilege of meeting her.
