TARVES, Gordon Melville

December 18, 1923 – Birch Hills, Saskatchewan
December 24, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Gordon passed away at the Foothills Hospital 24 December, 2014 at the age of 91 years.

Born in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, our Father was an outdoorsman at heart, reminiscent of his prairie upbringing. The family moved to the then bustling town of Calgary in 1929, the year the first talking picture equipment was installed in the Palace Theater to serve the then 30,000 strong residents. The days were filled with outdoor activities that brothers would do in the then still pioneer western town of Calgary. After Navy service from 1942 to 1945 with his brothers, Gordon followed his love of the outdoors joining the Forestry Department as a Ranger and subsequently Alberta Power as a landman. Gordon loved nothing better than to head for the hills on his favorite horse or park the family in a camping spot far from neighboring campers.

Gordon is survived by his children Donna (Dave) and Dale (Debra), sisters Joan and Gail.
Gordon was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Ethel (nee Suttle), parents Goldie and Gordon, sister Beryl and brothers Dale, Bruce, Terry and Laurie.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate and caring staff at the Belcher Chartwell Senior Residence and the sensitivity of the staff at Unit 62 Foothills Hospital.

In living memory of Gordon Tarves, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  2. Aloha Dale and Donna,
Another one of my favorite people is gone. I have the memories from “The Ranch” in Millerville where the Land Department (Calgary Power/TransAlta) would gather annually. Your parents were special people! I am sorry to miss the service. I was so touched when your Dad spoke at your Mom’s service.

    D4 – Dale, Debra, Donna & Dave,
So sorry to learn of your Dad’s passing. Many memories of him, Ethel, the smarter labs -Jeff & Strider- on Collingwood and at the ranch. The many chats with CFAC playing in the background, learning some Stampede survival tips, and oh – the laughs! My thoughts are with you all.
To you, Gord – one last time.

  4. Ted and Linda Suttle :

Gordon was our brother-in-law for over 50 years. We are going to miss them both everyday. We have such wonderful memories. Playing golf on his home made golf course in the country while Ethel cooked for the multitude of people that came every week-end. The laughter and such good times will always be with us. You Gord, are probably singing “Little Joe the Rangler” right now.
